Going into his third round match against Zdenek Kolar, Herbert was the favourite but there was always that niggling suspicion he could be stretched. That is exactly how the match went with Kolar able to sneak a set off Herbert before the Frenchman came back to win in three, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 and claim a quarterfinal berth.
Even in his second round match, which was Herbert’s first match of the season restart, Herbert had found it difficult to adjust to the rhythm of Jonas Forejtek, and dropped a set. However, that was to be expected given Herbert was coming off a longish break, and would have needed some time on court to get a move on.
It’s now been two matches since the 71st-ranked player hasn’t quite found the needed gear but the good news is Herbert has fought rather well. His next opponent is slightly better-ranked than his first two and does well on clay too which could mean another interesting match coming up.
Unless Herbert finds his rhythm very early in the encounter.

Griekspoor 3-0 on Clay This Year
The 199-ranked Dutchman Greikspoor has played three matches on clay this year, all of which have come at this Prague Challenger and obviously won them all.
Now that’s not surprising for a player who has reached the quarterfinal obviously but more vitally, it has come for one who did not play a single match during the pandemic break, let alone play on clay. Which is why a straight-set win over Andrey Kuznetsov followed by two fighting three-setters against Kimmer Coppejans and Jozef Kovalik would give him a lot of confidence coming into this encounter.
Before this, Griekspoor had had an ordinary season too. He managed to qualify for the Australian Open main draw where he lost to Taylor Fritz in the first round. Earning a wildcard at the Rotterdam Open didn’t help too much either as he went out in his opener, before a couple of third round exits followed at Challengers.
And then he never played again till this Prague Challenger. Interesting to see him perform the way he has so far.
