Pierre-Hugues Herbert v Aslan Karatsev Head to Head

This will be the first encounter between Herbert and Karatseva at this level.

Herbert Scrapes Through to the Semis

There was always a chance Herbert would be tested in his quarterfinal by Tallon Griekspoor and it turned out to be that way. The Frenchman was taken to a third set which he won 6-3 after having been stretched 7-5, 5-7 in the first two.

Herbert has had such issues earlier in this competition too, having used up three sets against Zdenek Kolar in his third round match too. He had won that one 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 to enter the last-eight.

And that wasn’t his first three-setter of the tournament. Earlier in his second round encounter, Jonas Forejtek had all but caused a surprised and it needed Herbert to comeback from a set down to scrape through to a win.

Amidst all of this, the good news is that for someone who doesn’t consider clay to be his most favourite surface, having won just three of his 10 titles at the lower level on it, he has fought tooth and nail from difficult situations. A match against a 263rd-ranked player should have him as a favourite but then again, it could need him to give a repeat showing of that same fight.

Karatsev in Crushing Form

Four matches played, four matches won and all of them in straight sets. That’s been Karatsev’s record in this tournament so far.

Starting out with a first round win against Robin Haase, he proceeded to rout the tournament second seed Jiri Vesely in straight sets as well. Ernests Gulbis has the experience and had shown the inclination to push on but in the face of Karatsev’s brilliance he was found wanting too.

Karatsev defeated Gulbis 6-3, 6-3 to make it to the quarterfinal. And then in the last eight, he met his first real challenge when the seventh seeded Henri Laaksonen took him to a first set tie-breaker.

As if to prove the Russian is no one-trick pony, he fought through the tie-breaker, winning it 7-3 before wrapping up the match in straight sets. Things could get very interesting against Herbert given his form and the latter’s experience.

Pierre-Hugues Herbert v Aslan Karatsev Prediction & Tip

Herbert is ranked way higher but don’t let that come in the way of a Karatsev’s showing in this competition. He will start a favourite for us, although we do reckon this will be the first match he will drop a set.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
