Marketa Vondrousova v Aliaksandra Sasnovich Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Vondrousova and Sasnovich.

Vondrousova Wasted No Time against Greet Minnen

While we expected Vondrousova to make it through to the second round, there were question-marks about her form and rustiness and we reckoned one might see a third set in her first round match against Greet Minnen. Vondrousova showed she is made of sterner stuff and went on to crush her opponent, defeating her 6-1, 6-4 in her first round match.

Vondrousova broken Minnen four times, and lost her own serve just once in the entire match but the one aspect she would like to improve on were her winners – she hit just 16 winners to 13 unforced errors. She was, fortunately, aided by the 25 unforced errors from Minnen which tilted the match in her favour.

The Czech 12th seed was off to a flier when she rattled off the first three games without a reply and by the time Minnen had realised what hit her, Vondrousova had already won the set.

The second set proved to be slightly more fighting in nature as despite Vondrousova’s early break of serve, Minnen broke back to make it 2-2. A few tough games on serve followed before Vondrousova got the all-important break in the ninth game of the set, and served it out to 30 off the next.

This was Vondrousova’s only second match won on the WTA circuit this year since her quarterfinal appearance at the Adelaide Open and should give her some respite following some poor form.

Sasnovich Faced a Tough Challenge

Down a set, Sasnovich looked to be no closer to finding a solution to Francesca Di Lorenzo’s serve in the second. With no breaks in serve, the second set went into a tie-breaker and Sasnovich looked to have muffed up a 5-2 lead as she lost the next two points on her own serve and two on her opponent’s to fall behind 6-5.

The Belarusian did not look behind from there on. She captured the next three points in a row to pouch the set and then broke a now-deflated Di Lorenzo thrice in a row to complete a comeback from behind win, 2-6, 7-6, 6-0.

Not since the first match she played this season at Shenzhen, where she defeated Anna-Lena Friedsam, had Sasnovich won a main draw match on hard court surface this season. There were a couple of victories at the Palermo Open on clay as a qualifier which would have given her the needed confidence but to have come through in such circumstances would boost her morale no ends.

Would that, however, be enough to challenge the French Open runner-up?
