Angelique Kerber v Anna-Lena Friedsam Head to Head

Kerber has won both their previous two outings, having overcome Friedsam at Nurnberg in 2014 and then completed a crushing win at the 2018 Australian Open.

Kerber Wins a Tense Straight-Set Match

The scoreline might not suggest so but Kerber’s 6-4, 6-4 win over Ajla Tomljanovic was a tense affair which could have gone either way. Or could have at least seen a third set.

Picture this, Kerber needed to win all of the five break-points she earned to carve out a place in the third round for herself, having herself gotten broken on three occasions.

The first four games of the first set saw both players lose their serves before Toljanovic finally retained hers in the fifth game. Things went on serve till the eighth game but Kerber then broke her opponent to love and held her serve to love too to clinch the opening set in 40 minutes.

The second set was bit of a reverse of the first, as things went on serve for the first four games. It was in the fifth Kerber managed the first break of serve and quickly doubled her advantage to go 5-2 up. Although she failed to serve out the match the first time, Kerber completed a straight-set win later.

This was Kerber’s first match since her fourth round exit in January and despite the stiff nature of the victory, to have come through in straight sets would have been a sense of relief for the former US Open winner.

Bizarre Season for Friedsam

Friedsam defeated the likes of Kristina Mladenovic, Viktoria Kuzmova and Daria Kasatkina to make it to the final of the WTA Lyon Open earlier this year but on either side of that tournament success was a strange set of results for the German.

She had qualified for the Shenzhen Open but lost in the first round, then fell in the first qualifier at the Australian Open before returning from the pandemic break and failing to win a single match at either the Prague Open or Cincinnati Open qualifiers.

Which is she was the second-favourite heading into this opening round tie against Caroline Dolehide, but aided by her opponent’s profligacy – Dolehide served eight double faults and hit 29 unforced errors – Friedsam came through 6-2, 6-2.

A far tougher opponent awaits her in the second round, one who might not come to Friedsam’s rescue with such an inconsistent play.

Angelique Kerber v Anna-Lena Friedsam Prediction & Tip

Kerber shouldn’t have too many difficulties here and her march into the third round might not get halted too easily. Straight set win for Kerber can be expected.

Tip: Kerber to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
