Alison Riske v Ann Li Head to Head
There has been one previous match between Riske and Li, which was held at the ITF Surbiton competition in 2019. That first round match was won by Riske in straight sets.

The 13th seeded Riske spent around an hour on court to get past Tatiana Maria in her first round match, blasting 36 winners and clinching six of the nine break-points she won. This allowed her a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 win and a place in the second round.
In doing so, Riske now has a chance to showcase her best performance at the US Open since 2013 when she last reached the fourth round of the tournament. Since then there have been five first round and one second round exits for Riske.
Riske did not have the best of resumptions after the pandemic break as she fell to a straight set loss to Amanda Anisimova at the Cincinnati Open. And even that was a continuation of a three-match losing streak before the break in which she had lost her openers at the Doha and Dubai Open.
The world number 20 will now hope to take confidence from her opener and from her fourth round appearance at the Australian Open as she looks at a possible ascent in the WTA rankings chart.

Li Gets Past Experienced Rus
20-year-old Li had entered her US Open first round match against Arantxa Rus as the second-favourite, with odds of 6/4 for her win and she did just that. Putting up a brave show, in the end it turned out to be a one-sided third set that decided Li’s fate and her second Grand Slam main draw win.
She had first made it to the second round at the Australian Open earlier this year before losing to the eventual winner Sofia Kenin in straight sets.
Li had earlier qualified for the main draw of the Cincinnati Open by winning a couple of qualifying matches, including one against Zarina Diyas before she went down to Karolina Muchova in the opener.
Can she now usurp a fellow American to make it to an unprecedented third round? She will have to reduce her unforced errors count, which was at 38 in the opening round, if she has to get close to doing that.
