Magda Linette v Danka Kovinic Head to Head
There have been two previous outings between these two players, and both came on clay. In the first, at the Grado ITF competition, Kovinic was a 6-0, 6-2 winner before Linette carved out the revenge at the WTA Bol.

Having lost her first round match at the Cincinnati Open last week, Linette would probably have been feeling a tad nervous coming into this opening round match against Maddison Inglis. The manner in which she started off, however, looked anything but that. Linette ran off with the first set 6-1.
Inglis came back strongly in the second though. Linette was broken in her first game and then again in the sixth game to give the Aussie a 5-1 lead. It did not have a negative effect on Linette’s game as she raced off in the third set, winning it 6-4.
Linette has already won a tournament this season, on the hard courts of the Hua Hin Open but other than that her performances have been slightly inconsistent. In none of the other tournaments she has played in this season, has Linette won two matches in a row.

Kovinic Wins First Match of the Season
Kovinic had played in four WTA and one exhibition competition coming into the US Open. The good news for her was Kovinic’s record at that exhibition tournament, the Eastern European Championship where she won all 10 of the matches she played.
The not-so-good part?
Kovinic hadn’t won a single match on the WTA circuit this season. In three of those WTA competitions she played, Kovinic was sent packing in the first round and in the fourth, the one she played in Cincinnati, she did not even make the main draw.
Which is why while playing Lizette Cabrera in the first round, Kovinic might have started off as a favourite but there were always those doubts. Which is also why a win, as hard-fought as it was in three sets, would have helped relieve some of the nerves for Kovinic.
Now she has a bigger task on her hand though.
