Goffin Coming off a Tough First Round Win

The 29-year-old Belgian admitted after his first-round victory against American, Reilly Opelka that the absence of fans worked in his favour. And he would be hoping that his second-round match will be more straight forward. Although getting past the early rounds has never really been Goffin’s problem.

His issues are when it comes to the second week of a Grand Slam.

From the previous five Grand Slams that the Belgian has played, he has been knocked out in the third rounds three times and from the fourth round once. He still hasn’t gone past the quarter-final stages at a Grand Slam in his career after three last eight appearances. Goffin seems to stuck in a loop of being too good against most players but not being able to step up against the best in the game.

Goffin did reach his first career Masters final last year at Cincinnati where he lost to Daniil Medvedev. A weaker draw this year may work to his advantage and he may finally be able to go past the last eight stages at a Grand Slam.

Harris Looking at Best Ever Grand Slam Showing

After Kevin Anderson’s first-round loss to Alexander Zverer, Harris is the lone South African left in the men’s singles draw. The world number 95 has equalled his best-ever Grand Slam showing by reaching the second round here in New York. The only other time he reached the second round was at the French Open last year.

Harris has also been making solid progress on the tour in the last year or so. He broke into the top 100 rankings last year and reached his first-ever ATP semi-finals in Chengdu, China.

This season he did have a phenomenal run at Adelaide where he started from the qualifiers and ended up reaching the final. He did go down against Andrey Rublev in the end but he did three players higher than him in the ranking during that run.

It will be a tough ask for the South African to beat a top 10 player in Goffin. But he will certainly fancy his chances against the Belgian.

David Goffin v Lloyd Harris Prediction & Tip

Harris has it in him to trouble Goffin and it is likely to be a closer affair then what the rankings show. But Goffin should go through in the end whose real challenge will start when he gets to the second week of the tournament.

Tip: Goffin to win in four sets: 2/1 (bet365)
