Stefanos Tsitsipas v Borna Coric Head to Head

The players have only met once, at the Rome Masters in 2018, in which Coric retired trailing 1-4 in the opening set.

Tsitsipas Clinical To His Seeding

Stefanos Tsitsipas ended 2019 as the the winner of the year-end ATP Tour Finals, which by far has been the biggest achievement of his career thus far.

Coming into 2020 with lofty expectations, the season did not get off to the best of starts for him. His performance at the ATP Cup was far from optimal and it was followed by the Australian Open, where he faced an early loss against Milos Raonic.

After another early loss at Rotterdam, Tsitsipas hit a good run, defending his title at Marseille without dropping a set and made the final in Dubai again before being runner-up, this time to Novak Djokovic.

The Greek looked in good touch at the Western & Southern Open, prevailing against mighty tall individuals with monstrous serves, in Kevin Anderson, John Isner, and Reilly Opelka. He however fell short in the semi-finals against another giant server Milos Raonic (again).

Tsitsipas looked strong in his opening two rounds here at the US Open and although pushed by American Maxime Cressy in the second round, was able to prevail without dropping a set.

The number four seed will have his first challenge against fellow Next Gen Borna Coric from Croatia in the round of 32.

Coric Hoping To Reverse Troublesome Summer

Although only 23-years of age, Borna Coric has been on the circuit for a while and made news for a host of different reasons, from defeating Roger Federer twice in 2018, including on grass, to making the finals of the ATP Master 1000 in Shanghai the same year, to some not so positive media this summer around the Adria Tour and Covid-19.

After a successful 2018, 2019 saw a mix of injuries and poor form and just as he was looking back to himself making the semi-finals at the ATP 500 in Rio this February, the season was halted by the pandemic.

Coric participated in the now not so well looked upon Adria Tour. Not only did he procure the virus, he was involved in a social media spat with Nick Kyrgios of Australia. Kyrgios had criticized players for participating in the Adria Tour which Coric did not take too kindly.

His form ever since he recovered from the virus and started playing again was patchy and lacked any sort of rhythm. Coric played four matches at the Eastern European Championship exhibition and lost three of them.

At the Western & Southern Open he did well to win his first-round match against Benoit Paire but the Frenchman had to retire after the first set. Coric lost in straight sets in the second round to David Goffin.

Coric has not had it easy this week at the US Open either. He won a hard-fought first set against Pablo Andujar of Spain before easily winning the other two sets to wrap up the match. That was followed by a marathon five-setter against Juan Ignacio Londero, where he came from two sets to one down to win in five sets.

The Croat probably has his greatest challenge yet of the revived season, against Tsitsipas on Friday in round three.

Stefanos Tsitsipas v Borna Coric Prediction & Tip

A match to look forward to, between two players earmarked for greater things. While Coric has been around longer than Tsitsipas, he has not quite got the results he and his team would have hoped for by now. After a difficult summer personally, Coric will be happy to have got some wins under his belt this week, although challenged immensely in the last round.

Both players have what it takes to emerge victorious, but Tsitsipas is probably more established and the better player at the moment. Expect Coric to perhaps take a set, but a round of 16 berth awaits the Greek.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in four sets: 13/5 (bet365)
