Ekaterina Alexandrova v Hsieh Su-wei Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between Alexandrova and Hsieh with the latter having won both of them. Both matches came in 2018 – at the US Open and the Korean Open. In that second match, Hsieh dropped just one game.

Those were on hard court surfaces, this would be on clay.

Alexandrova Needs to Make a Quick Switch to Clay

The Russian Alexandrova has four titles in her career including three WTA $125k ones, none of them on clay. And that extends to her overall clay court record in her career too, struggling to make deep runs in such tournaments.

In a bid to try and get herself tuned to the clay swing following the curtailed US Open series, Alexandrova participated in two exhibition tournaments during the pandemic break and then began the new phase of the season with the Palermo Open and Prague Open. Earlier this week, she then played in the Italian Open.

Her win-loss record so far on clay including all these matches? 3-7. Included the first round losses at Prague and Rome. The Russian’s only win on tour on red dirt came against Kristina Mladenovic at the Palermo Open but a struggle on the hard courts of the Cincinnati Open and US Open could also play a part in how she feels mentally going into this tournament.

Hsieh in the Form of Her Life (but in Doubles!)

At the time of writing, here’s what Hsieh has done this year in doubles tennis.

Played the Brisbane International. Won the title.

Australian Open. Runner-up.

Dubai International: Title won.

Doha: Title.

Rome, ongoing, a finalist as things stand right now!

Unfortunately for Hsieh, singles tennis looks to only be a part of her plan because she has the ranking to play it, not because winning matches is a goal. Because the results are at the other polar end of her doubles ones.

Five tournaments played so far before this, five losses in the opening round. Hsieh did win a couple of qualifiers in Dubai, but even there only managed to qualify for the main draw as a lucky loser, only to fall in round one.

Clay, traditionally, hasn’t been her preferred surface either, even in doubles and expecting her to cause too damage here will be bit of a miracle.

Alexandrova v Hsieh Prediction & Tip

Easy win for Alexandrova can be expected here, even in straight sets if she can get her rhythm early.

Tip: Alexandrova to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
