Jelena Ostapenko v Lauren Davis Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in Auckland in 2017. The match was one set all, when Ostapenko was forced to retire through injury.

Ostapenko Hoping for Form Before Favourite French Open

Three years ago, Ostapenko won by far the biggest title of her career, when she beat Simona Halep in the final to win the French Open, making her an instant sporting heroine in her native Latvia.

That same year she reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, and, a year later, she was a semi-finalist at the All-England Club.

Despite another title success in Korea in 2017 and winning the Luxembourg Open last year, that triumph at Roland Garros now seems a  long time ago for Ostapenko, whose form has largely deserted her in the meantime, causing her to tumble down the world rankings.

Since the start of 2019, she has failed to progress beyond the third round of any Grand Slam or Premier event.

her progress this year has also been hampered by illness and injury, and she was one of those players who chose not to travel to New York to play the Cincinnati Open or US Open because of fears over the coronavirus.

That means that she only made her competitive reappearance since lockdown in Rome last week, before lost to Maga Linette of Poland in straight sets in the first round.

Davis, a US Clay Court specialist

Davis is a clay-court specialist, whose most recent tournament win came on that surface in an ITF event in Bonita Springs, USA, last May.

Despite that, her one senior WTA title came on the hard courts of Auckland in 2017 – the same event where Ostapenko was forced to retire from their match.

Unlike her opponent, Davis has played quite a lot of tennis this year, but without any conspicuous success, with her best result prior to lockdown coming in Hobart, where she reached the third round.

Nor has her form shown any signs of improvement since the resumption of the sport. She lost in the first round in Lexington, failed to qualify for Cincinnati, and was beaten again in the first round of the US Open, by Alize Cornet of France.

Last week she suffered another first round defeat in Rome, well beaten by the world 102, Kaja Juvan of Slovenia.

Jelena Ostapenko v Lauren Davis Prediction & Tip

In normal circumstances, and if both were playing at the top of their respective games, Ostapenko would begin the clear favourite to win this match. However, the two women come into this match in poor form, and, in the case of the Latvian, with a lack of match practice. Despite this, she may just have the class on clay to edge what may be a close match.

Tip: Ostapenko to win: 8/11 (bet365)
