Gauff Comes Through the Qualifiers

After a solid start to the season, both at the beginning of the year and another after the resumption of the season post pandemic, things have come to bit of a halt for Gauff. Over the next four tournaments, following the semifinal at the Lexington Open, Gauff has won just two of her six main draw matches.

A first round exit at the Cincinnati Open, another opening loss at the US Open, and back to back second round defeats at Rome and Paris might have dented some of the burgeoning confidence.

Gauff, however, returns to the surface on which she has won her maiden WTA title – it came indoors last season in Linz. Coincidentally, the highly-talented teenager was a qualifier in that event that as well, making the main draw as a lucky loser before defeating some of the top players en route the title.

Can she repeat the same dose here, after having overcome Jana Ceplova and Irina Camelia Begu over the qualifying rounds.

Siniakova Solid on Clay But…

…her record on hard courts and indoor hard courts hasn’t been the best. In her only indoor hard court experience this year, she was beaten in the first round at the St. Petersburg Open while last year, she ended 1-4 on win-loss record on the same surface.

Siniakova would know she starts off as the second favourite in this one – the bookmakers indicate she is miles behind with Gauff starting out at 1/3 to win it – but there’s always that confidence factor. We already know how Gauff has crashed out early in the previous four tournaments but a look at how Siniakova has done should give her hope even if on clay.

The Czech was a quarterfinalist at the Strasbourg Open and then went on to make it to the third round at the French Open as well, losing to Aryna Sabalenka and Kiki Bertens in those two matches.

She would know the difference between the surfaces is stark but confidence is a funny, old thing.

Cori Gauff v Katerina Siniakova Prediction and Tip

Gauff is a favourite but can she win this in straight sets? We reckon that might not be that straightforward and even a straight-set victory could be a very stretched one.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
