Jan-Lennard Struff v Vasek Pospisil Head to Head

The pair have faced each other twice so far in their career. And both players have won one match each. Their first-ever meeting was back in 2014 on the grass courts of Herogenbosch where the Canadian won in straight sets. They met again two years later, this time on the clay courts of Munich when the German won a hard-fought three-setter.

Struff Still Waiting For a Strong Showing

The 30-year-old has been a constant feature in the top 50 rankings for the best part of two years now. He achieved his best-ever ranking of 29 as well & is currently sitting on the 36th spot.

But despite consistent results, he has not been able to go deep in a tournament this year. The German does tend to do well in an initial couple of rounds of the tournaments. But he has not made it to a single semi-final this season.

The closest he came to a semi-final was at Dubai earlier in the season where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas after winning the opening set. But apart from that the first half of the season for him was quite disappointing.

It looked much more promising once the season resumed. Struff made it to the last eight at the Cincinnati and followed it up with a third-round appearance at the US Open. But once again since then, he has not been able to go past the second round in any of the seven tournaments he has played in.

The German received a bye in the first round here at Sofia. And he will be hoping to make the full use of a relatively easier side of the draw.

Laboured Win for Pospisil in the First Round

The Canadian was up against the lucky loser and world number 216 Illya Marchenko in the first round. But it was hard work for the 30-year-old as it took him three sets and a tiebreaker to go through.

In a match that lasted almost three hours, the Canadian absorbed the pressure well and that proved to be the difference in the end. Pospisil faced ten breakpoints in the match but ended up saving eight of them.

On the other hand, he produced eight aces, some of them at a very crucial juncture to get him out of a tricky situation. For someone who could not pick up the racket for almost six months after a going through a surgery on his disc last year, his progress back to the top has been a slow but steady one. He was as high as 25 in the world rankings at one point of time.

But the injury meant that he dropped to as low as 248 upon his comeback from injury. Now he is back into the top 100 and will be looking to further move up from his 74th rank with another win here in Sofia.

Struff v Pospisil Prediction and Tip

Struff is the favourite going into the match given the struggles Pospisil had in the first round. The Canadian relies a lot on his net game, something that has improved a lot from his doubles adventures. But that requires a lot of energy and quick movement. That is something that Pospisil may struggle with after playing a three-hour-long match today.

Tip: Struff to win in straight sets: 13/8 (bet365)
