This will be the first match between the 18-year-old Kostyuk and a woman who has more than 18 years of experience on the circuit!

Zvonareva Steady in 2020

While Zvonareva hasn’t played in too many tournaments, she looks to be finding her way back to making it to her ranking from the previous season. The Russian finished 2019 ranked 160th in the world but then fell down the charts after failing to defend her points at the Shenzhen Open and the St. Petersburg, where she had made it to the semifinal last.

In the first week of February, Zvonareva had fallen down to outside the top 400 on the WTA charts before her resurrection’s seen her return to 173rd at the moment. And that has been thanks to her showing at the Indian Wells Challenger, Cincinnati Open and the Istanbul ITF competition.

All three have been worth different points, but would have given the former world number two the confidence she can claw back into the top 100 as well with some luck. In Istanbul, in a competition played towards the end of the previous month, Zvonareva made it to the final before falling to Kaia Kanepi, while having made it through the qualifiers at the Western & Southern Open to enter the second round.

She starts off against a talented youngster, who was ranked 523rd just two seasons ago but broke into the top 100 recently.

Kostyuk Holds Fort on the ITF Tour

It’s very early days in Kostyuk’s career but she has already shown what she is capable of, as her performance at the US Open earlier in the season bore testimony to. Kostyuk had defeated Daria Kasatkina and Anastasija Sevastova in the first two rounds of that competition before nearly putting Naomi Osaka to sword in a thrilling third round encounter.

That was the highlight of the season for Kostyuk obviously but she has done well at the lower circuit too.

The Ukrainian has won a title in Cairo, and comes into this tournament with two, back to back finals under her belt. In the first, at Macon, Kostyuk lost to Cici Bellis in the final while that was followed by another defeat in the title-decider in Tyler, with Ann Li being the beneficiary this time.

With that kind of form, expect her to give her much more senior opponent a run for her money.

Zvonareva v Kostyuk Prediction And Tip

It is not much of a surprise Kostyuk starts off a favourite with bet365 offering 4/7 for her win but a steady Zvonareva could carve something out of her own here.

Tip: Zvonareva to win a set – Yes: 8/15 (bet365)
