De Minaur Hoping For Strong End to 2020

Alex de Minaur burst on to the scene as a teenager in 2018, when he was runner-up at two ATP tournaments, in Sydney and at the Citi Open in Washington DC.  2019 solidified his status further, as he won three ATP titles – in Sydney. Atlanta, and Zhuhai. He was also a beaten finalist at Basel and Milan. He ended 2019 at a career high ranking of number 18 in the world.

2020 has not been quite as impressive for the Aussie, who started the year well at the ATP Cup, but then had an indifferent run heading into the Covid-19 tour break in March.  The return of the tour saw a good run for De Minaur at the US Open where he lost in the quarter finals to the eventual champion Dominic Thiem, but the clay swing was not friendly to the Aussie.  Minor niggles saw him out of the start of the indoor swing and he did not have the best of weeks at the Paris Masters last week either

Ranked just within the top 30 now, De Minaur will be looking to end the season well here in Sofia with a (somewhat) weaker field and then get the necessary time off before the start of the tennis season back home in Australia for him.

Can Karatsev Challenge The Gritty Aussie

Russian Aslan Karatsev is a relatively unknown name on the ATP tour.  However, he has met with ample success on the Challenger & Future Tours, with three ATP Challenger & six ITF Futures Titles. Despite having played in the qualifiers of all majors, Karatsev has never made it to the main draw of a Grand Slam.

Currently ranked at a career high ATP ranking of 119, the Russian did well to defeat Japan’s Taro Daniel in the opener (after making it through two rounds of qualifiers) in straight sets. A tight first set saw a 7-2 tiebreak win for the Russian, but a relatively convincing straight set 6-1 win followed for Karatsev.

The Russian knows the opposition gets significantly more difficult now, but will hope to put up a good show against Alex de Minaur in the next round.

De Minaur v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

Despite being a little rusty, this should be a good match for the De Minaur to get back into the groove. Expect the Aussie to win in straight sets

Tip: De Minaur to win in straight sets: 8/136 (bet365)
