Aryna Sabalenka v Stefanie Voegele Head to Head

Their only previous match came on clay at the Lugano Open in 2018. Sabalenka ran off to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Voegele in that encounter, making it to the final in the process before losing to Elise Mertens.

While on paper, Sabalenka came through 6-4, 6-4 as we had also thought she would in her opener against Jasmine Paolini, the match came with its own moments where the higher-ranked Belarusian had to put up a fighting display.

In the end it was her confidence and form that saw her through because Paolini did have her chances.

The first set, for instance, saw Sabalenka drop her serve in the fourth game and Paolini hold to love following that to fall 1-4 behind. A sudden transformation in form saw Sabalenka then reel off five games in a row to clinch the set and take a 1-0 lead.

Paolini halted that momentum from her opponent in the second set, fighting off break-points in the first and the fifth game but Sabalenka finally got the better of her serve in the seventh game. Even that came off the eighth break-point of a game that didn’t seem like it would see an end to it.

The Italian broke right back only to lose serve yet again before Sabalenka completed the win in the next.

With this victory, Sabalenka extended her winning streak to five matches after having lifted the Ostrava Open and will hope to continue with the momentum when she takes on an opponent who has had a forgettable season.

Voegele Wins a Battle of the Equals

Neither Voegele, nor her opponent Viktoria Kuzmova had any sort of form coming into their opening round match here in Linz.

The Swiss player had earlier made it to the title-decider of a lower level tournament, the Newport Beach Open in February but since then had struggled to get going in main draws of tournaments. Before defeating Kuzmova, she had won no match this season.

With defeats in the qualifying rounds of the Ostrava Open, Cincinnati Open and Italian Open earlier this season and other opening round losses as well, Voegele has barely had anything to cheer about. Which is why when she fell behind a break of serve in the eighth game it looked like curtains for her chances.

Voegele fought back from being 3-5 down in the opening set to carve out a 7-6, 6-3 victory and seal her first main draw win in over nine months. Fair to say then, facing Sabalenka would be a difficult proposition.

Sabalenka v Voegele Prediction And Tip

Sabalenka could run riot here and starts off 1/8 to win this and 2/5 to do that in straight sets. A rare occasion on which we are looking at an under-games market.

Tip: Under 18.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
