Yulia Putintseva v Barbora Krejcikova Head to Head

The pair have met twice before, once in doubles and once in singles, although Putintseva scratched from that match in qualifying for the 2018 Canadian Open due to injury. However, the previous year at the Kremlin Cup, Krejcikova and her partner Katerina Siniokova trounced Putintseva and Maryana Zonovska for the loss of just one game.

Putintseva Makes Confident Start against Trevisan

Putintseva began her season with a confident straight sets win over Martina Trevisan, the world number 85 from Italy.

Both women initially struggled to hold serve, but it was the Italian who cracked first, surrendering her serve in the fifth game of the first set, when Putintseva forced and converted a break point. The Russian-born Kazakh then broke again in the ninth game to close out the set.

The Italian then dropped her serve again at the start of the second set, and, after that, the match went with serve, with Putintseva rarely challenged by her Italian opponent.

It was generally an efficient performance from Putintseva who converted all of her break point opportunities, and follows on from a solid previous season in which she reached her career-best ranking of 27th in the world.

Krejcikova Given a Gentle Opener

Krejcikova was given an easy first-round draw in the form of the world 295 Jamie Loeb of the USA. And she made no mistakes against an opponent inexperienced at this level, racing through the first set in just 30 minutes, dropping just the one game and breaking the American serve twice.

She was made to work a little harder in the second set but it was still largely one way traffic with the American barely threatening.

And when Krejcikova forced successive service breaks midway through the second set, the match was as good as won.

The Czech did not serve any better than Loeb – the number of first serves she landed was less than the American. However, when they did go in she was far more effective in what she did with them and on the return as well.

Putintseva v Krejcikova Prediction and Tip

Although Putintseva is the higher ranked player, Krejcikova starts the marginal favourite for this match. It could well be close though, and three sets may be on the cards.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
