John Isner v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

The pair have  met once before in the first round of the Australian Open last year. On that occasion Isner came from behind to win in four sets, in a match that saw four tie-breaks.

Isner in His First Competitive Outing of 2021

The number two seed enjoyed a bye in the first round, so this will be his first competitive match since losing to compatriot Sebastian Korda in the second round of the French Open. That though was on clay and he will be glad to be back on hard courts which are much better suited to his service powered game.

Now 35, Isner is heading into the twilight of his career, but will be hoping for an upturn in form after suffering a series of early defeats post-lockdown in 2020.

More recently, Isner has become mired in controversy off the court for his public opposition to the wearing of masks, which has seen him attract heavy criticism for his views in a country which has seen more people contract and die of Covid-19 than any other.

He will be glad just to focus on tennis for a while.

Monteiro Progressed after Winning All-Brazilian Clash

26-year-old Monteiro booked his place against Isner after overcoming fellow Brazilian, Thomacz Bellucci in the first round, a man ranked almost 200 places below him in the world.

He began well, breaking his opponent’s serve in the very first game, and then consolidated that with another break, before faltering, handing one of those breaks back to Bellucci. However, he then forced and converted a set point to grab the advantage.

The second set was tighter, with neither man able to force an opening, although Monteiro was forced to save five break points on his own serve, struggling to maintain parity.

Serving to stay in the match though, Belluci’s game deserted him and he meekly surrendered it to love, bringing a close to a match that had lasted an hour and 40 minutes.

Isner v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Isner will begin favourite to win this match by dint of his higher ranking and based on the evidence of their one previous meeting. Serve is likely to dominate and there will not be many service breaks, but Isner should prevail.

Tip:  Isner to win in straight sets: 11/8 (bet365)
