Gael Monfils v Matteo Berrettini  Head to Head

Monfils and Berrettini have met only once before this, and it was a match for the ages. The Italian triumphed in a pulsating five-setter at the 2019 US Open en route to his historic semifinal showing.

Monfils Is France’s No.1 Singles Player

Being the leading light of Team France, Gael Monfils is vested with a huge responsibility of ensuring his country can successfully navigate their way out of the group stages the 2021 ATP Cup.

Monfils and France played well in their singles rubbers at last year’s edition, but were undone by their terrible results in doubles, where Édouard Roger-Vasselin and Nicolas Mahut went 0-3, despite their status as one of the best doubles team in the game.

The world no.11 played a super first half of the season in 2020, as he won back-to-back titles during the February indoor swing. But results took a turn for the worse post lockdown, failing to win a single match.

The 34-year-old has appointed Dominic Thiem’s former coach Gunter Bresnik as part of his team for the 2021 season, after ending his partnership with Liam Smith. Monfils’ record at the ATP Cup is 1-1, but he is currently on a four-match losing streak after the aforementioned bad run of form since the tour’s restart.

Berrettini Steers Italy Past Austria

Following Fabio Fognini’s shocking defeat to Denis Novak, Matteo Berrettini needed to do something he had never accomplished before in his career to give his country a fighting chance in the tie. He had beaten Dominic Thiem before, but not whilst he was ranked inside the top three in the ATP rankings.

Berrettini did not put a foot wrong and he produced a dominant display to beat the reigning US Open champion in straight sets. The Italian from the Eternal city, maintained his solid presence behind the baseline and not allowing the power-hitting Austrian to swing freely. He smacked five aces, and averaged over 70% of points won behind his booming first delivery.

Despite Thiem’s late charge, Berrettini held firm, only dropping serve once during the match. Later during the day, he joined forces with Fabio Fognini in the decisive doubles match, and the pair beat the duo of Thiem and Novak to nudge Italy ahead in the tie and the group.

The 24-year-old missed last year’s edition of the ATP Cup, and he admits he missed the atmosphere across all cities as Italy were knocked out in the group stage. But he leads his country’s charge this year and is keen to impress at Melbourne Park.

Monfils v Berrettini Prediction and Tip

It is hard to imagine the contrast in form for Monfils during the first and second half of last season. He arrives in Melbourne on the back of a four match losing streak and runs straight into an in-form opponent. The Italian should win after a confidence-boosting opening day.

Tip: Berrettini to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
