Stefanos Tsitsipas v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

There have been six overall meetings at different levels of the sport but in the main draws at the highest level there have been two matches and Tsitsipas was the winner both times. The first came at the Japan Open in 2018 where the Greek needed three sets to get past de Minaur before he made it 2-0 at the Paris Masters in 2019.

They had also met in the qualifiers of the Istanbul Open, two Challenger competitions and the final of the Next-Gen ATP Finals tournament.

Tsitsipas Hoping to Shrug off Poor Season-Ending

Continuing from where he left off in 2019, Tsitsipas made an excellent start to 2020 as well with a title win at the Marseille Open and then reached the final in Dubai where he went down to Novak Djokovic.

A semifinalist at the Cincinnati Masters after the pandemic-break, Tsitsipas then showed his prowess on clay when he first entered the final of the Hamburg Open, losing to Andrey Rublev, and then was a semifinalist at the French Open. There, he went down to Djokovic again but not before he had pushed the world number one to the fifth set.

Unfortunately for Tsitsipas, he seemed to have picked up an injury during that encounter against the world’s best player, and it did not do him too many favours in the last three tournaments he played indoors after that. A second round defeat at Vienna, an opening loss at the Paris Masters and two defeats in three matches at the ATP Finals left him with a less than satisfying end to the 2020 season.

Can he now kick-start the new season with a better showing than how he ended it?

Antalya Winner Alex Suffers Opening Loss

Having kick-started the new year with a title win at the Antalya Open, de Minaur looked to be heading towards his sixth victory of the season in a row when he opened Australia’s campaign at the ATP Cup against Roberto Bautista-Agut.

Unfortunately for de Minaur, Bautista-Agut found his rhythm at the right time to crash into the home lad’s party, winning the encounter 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to leave Australia struggling.

In the end, the home side lost 3-0 to Spain, leaving them with no option but to try and win their final group tie by the same margin and hope for Spain to lose to Greece as well. And for that to happen, de Minaur would need to summon up the kind of form that had seen him make the final of the Antwerp Open late last year and win the title in Antalya earlier this year.

Tsitsipas, however, is an opponent of a very pedigree and it might be expecting too much from the Aussie.

Tsitsipas v de Minaur Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas might not have played for a long time but expect him to clinch this encounter. That said de Minaur could push him into a third set as well.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
