Garbine Muguruza v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head

This will be the first time that former French Open finalists Muguruza and Vondrousova will be facing off in a competitive encounter. (Muguruza had obviously gone on to win that title in Roland-Garros)

Muguruza Mauls Kenin to Make Semis

Muguruza has now played three rounds in Melbourne and the most games she has lost in a set has been two. Two of the three times that happened came in her quarterfinal against the Australian Open winner, Sofia Kenin, who had beaten Muguruza the last time they had played, in that title-decider in Melbourne.

On Friday, however, Muguruza was irresistible.

After the first set went on serve for a while to begin with, Muguruza grabbed twelve points in succession and then held on to her serve to take a 5-2 lead.

The Spaniard then got herself an early break in the second set only to be broken by Kenin, for the first time to level things up at 2-2. Unfortunately for the American, her fightback, something she is known for in her young career, lasted only so much as Muguruza stormed to take the last four games and clinch her place in the semifinal.

This win comes on the back of Muguruza’s straight-set wins over Alison van Uytvanck and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, dropping a sum total of five games across those four sets. She will be gunning for early 2021 glory following what

Vondrousova Overturns Quick Podoroska Start

While Vondrousova was a mild favourite to win this encounter, Nadia Podoroska’s confidence coming into this encounter was sky-high. And when she broke Vondrousova early in the first set, taking a 4-2 lead in the process, things looked headed according to the script.

Even when the Czech broke back to level at 4-4, it seemed like not much could shake off the Argentine’s confidence and she broke right back before serving out the set.

Vondrousova clawed back into the encounter with a fighting hold in the third game, having faced four break-points and then breaking Podoroska to go 3-1 up. Holding her next three games, she claimed the set to equalise the match and force the match tie-breaker.

By then the former French Open runner-up’s confidence looked to have sky-rocketed and she soon raced off to a 7-1 lead in the tie-breaker. And while Podoroska showed signs of a fight, it was the Czech who claimed the match 10-4 in the final set.

This followed wins over Varvara Gracheva and Vera Zvonareva in the first two rounds following an opening bye.

Muguruza v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

While Vondrousova has done well to get till here, Muguruza’s excellent form makes her a red-hot favourite to make it to the final.

Tip: Muguruza to win in straight sets: 11/8 (bet365)
