Johanna Konta v Kaja Juvan Head to Head

This will Konta’s first match ever against Juvan, a player ranked outside the top 100 and nine years younger than her.

Konta’s Inconsistencies a Worry

For a player who made it to the semifinal of two tournaments last year, the Monterrey Open and the Cincinnati Open, it is quite a surprise to look at her win-loss record of 8-9 in 2020. And that’s to do with her performances in the other competitions she participated in.

Pre-pandemic, Konta was a first round loser in the first three tournaments she played including the 2020 Australian Open. After tennis returned from the pandemic break, the world number 14 won just two of the six matches she played in other than that Cincinnati Open semifinal.

And coming into this year’s Gippsland Trophy for women, Konta did not waste too much winning her opener against Bernarda Pera but then fell in three sets to Irina-Camelia Begu. Begu had gone into the encounter as 5/2 rank outsider and came back from a set down to take the next two in tie-breakers.

Can Konta turn things around here against a talented youngster known to make things difficult for her opponents.

Juvan’s Steady Rise towards Top 100

From her WTA ranking of 532nd in the world less than three years ago to inching towards breaking into the top 100, Juvan looks to have shown she has the talent to win a few WTA titles and go deeper into tournaments.

Playing at the Australian Open qualifiers earlier this year, Juvan won all her three rounds in straight sets, which follows on from the Slovenian having qualified for all the three Grand Slams held last year. In fact she had also made it to the second round at both, the French Open and US Open as well.

She then participated at the Gippsland Trophy as well and started off with an opening round win over Wang Yafan before falling in a three-set fight against Iga Swiatek. Juvan won the first set there but the obvious class of Swiatek stood out and she claimed the victory and a place in the third round.

Can Juvan now push a player who hasn’t quite had the results going her way in recent times?

Konta v Juvan Prediction and Tip

Konta’s superior ranking make her a favourite (4/9) but not by a lot given she is playing a qualifier. And that’s to do with her own form as opposed to some of the confidence Juvan has shown. Could see a fighting three-setter here.

Tip: Juvan to win a set – Yes: 4/6 (bet365)
