Marketa Vondrousova v Rebecca Peterson Head to Head

These two players will be involved in what will be their first ever meeting.

Vondrousova Suffered A Crushing Defeat To Muguruza

As one of Czech Republic’s finest upstarts, Marketa Vondrousova will attempt to address a poor record at the Australian Open. She has won just two matches in her three visits Down Under, which makes it her second worst Slam after Wimbledon (zero wins so far).

The 21-year-old, will start her Australian Open bid on Monday, with her confidence torn to pieces by a no-nonsense Garbine Muguruza. The Spaniard brutalized the Czech youngster in ruthless fashion in their semifinal encounter at the Yara Valley Classic, winning 6-1 6-0 in next to no time.

Vondrousova was broken five times, and won a meagre 28% of first serve points. It was a stark contrast in performance from the earlier rounds where she had beaten the likes of Vera Zvonareva and Nadia Podoroska. But Muguruza suffocated the court, crunching winners from left, right and center.

It will be intriguing to see just how much resilience Vondrousova will show in her next match, which incidentally is a first round of the Australian Open against Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson. It will be a test of character and fighting through adversity to avoid being one of the big casualties on the opening day of the Australian Open.

Third Straight Melbourne Appearance For Sweden’s Finest

In terms of match wins, Rebecca Peterson’s 2020 is the closest thing to bankruptcy. The 25-year-old won just three matches all year, and descended down from a career-high ranking of world no.43 to no.55 by the end of the year.

Things started brightly for her at the Yara Valley Classic where she picked up her first completed match win since Monterrey last March, when she beat Maddison Inglis of Australia. In spite of defeat in her next match, she competed admirably against USA’s Shelby Rogers, going down in three sets.

As Sweden’s top ranked player Rebecca Peterson will be playing in the main draw of the Australian Open for the third straight year. She advanced to the second round on her debut in 2019, where she beat Sorana Cirstea before falling to Maria Sharapova in straight sets.

Can she upset the former French Open finalist on Monday?

Vondrousova v Peterson Prediction and Tip

Vondrousova starts as a clear favorite here, but Peterson is a wily competitor who can be notorious of making this more problematic for the powerful Czech. It is tempting to back the Swede to take a set off Czech who must be licking her wounds after that damaging defeat to Muguruza.

Tip: Peterson to win a set: 1/1 (bet365)
