Garbine Muguruza v Ludmilla Samsonova Head to Head

Muguruza Continues Good Form

The Spaniard and former world number one fell just short of winning her first WTA title of the season when she lost to the world number one Ash Barty at Melbourne last week but that doesn’t discount her form in the lead-up to that encounter.

Muguruza, a runner-up at last year’s Australian Open, smashed her way past four opponents, including Sofia Kenin and Marketa Vondrousova, in straight sets, losing a sum total of 12 games across those four matches.

Even in the final, she came up against an in-rhythm world number one, but put up a brave fight in the opening set before falling to a 7-6 (3), 6-4 defeat.

Against her first round opponent here, lucky loser Margarita Gasparyan, Muguruza did not have the best of opening sets, but once she got her rhythm back, the match ended quite quickly. The Spaniard broke Gasparyan early, was broken back to make it 3-3 but from there on turned things around.

Muguruza won nine of the next 10 games to complete a 6-4, 6-0 victory and march into the second round.

Samsonova Blunts Badosa to Move into Second Round

A qualifier here at the Australian Open, Samsonova won her first ever main draw match at a Grand Slam on Tuesday when she edged out Paula Badosa in a thrilling three-setter.

It took Samsonova two hours and 39 minutes to get there, but in the end, she would be mighty relieved to have fought through to a win after being a set and 2-0 down in the second.

After losing the opening set in a tie-breaker, Samsonova was broken in her very first service game, and the writing seemed to be on the wall. That, however, wasn’t how the result materialised, as she broke right back before taking a 5-3 lead herself.

Another break took the set into a tie-breaker which saw Samsonova fall 1-3 behind only to recover and win it 7-4.

That wasn’t all though. The Russian lost serve yet again early in the third set, leaving Badosa to serve for the match at 5-4. Samsonova broke back, held serve and then converted the first match-point she got to complete an exciting opening round victory.

Muguruza v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

Samsonova will be relieved and high on confidence but Muguruza is a different kettle of fish, and we reckon the Spaniard should win this in straight sets again. The one factor to consider here and for any future matches Muguruza plays in is the exhaustion given she has already played six matches in eight days.

Tip: Muguruza to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
