Felix Auger-Aliassime v James Duckworth Head to Head

The head-to-head is tied at 1-1. Duckworth won the first meeting in the qualifying round of the Toronto Masters in 2016, but it is Auger-Aliassime who the last meeting in Adelaide in straight sets last year.

Auger-Aliassime Rolls With Neat Performance

There is yet more heartbreak for Felix Auger-Aliassime as he continues to stumble at the final hurdle. It was a case of deja vu at the Murray River Open final where the young Canadian lost in another championship. Astonishingly he has now lost in all seven finals he has contested and has not won a single set in any of them.

There was no case of being sentimental for this latest failure, the 20-year-old needed to bounce back and fast. Less than 24 hours later, he was due on Court 13 to start his Australian Open journey.

Auger-Aliassime was ruthless in taking down German qualifier Cedrik-Marcel Stebe. It took an hour and 40 minutes to complete a 6-2 6-4 6-2 rout. He fired seven aces, with his fastest serve hitting the 200 kmh mark. He also won 92%  of net points. For a baseliner that was an impressive figure and he was looking to conserve energy and cut down on running.

With this win, Auger-Aliassime has already bettered last year’s achievement. He fell to a surprise defeat by Ernests Gulbis last January, but he steadied himself with a series of good results during the indoor hardcourt tournaments throughout the year (reached three finals on the surface).

Duckworth Registers Rare Main Draw Win

The pressure that comes with playing in front of the home faithful can sometimes be tough bear. But James Duckworth was determined to impress this time round. In a career of comebacks that even Ricky Balboa would be proud of, Duckworth is a man that doesn’t live up to giving up.

Majority of the 29-year-old Sydney native’s Grand Slam wins have come at the Australian Open. In fact, of his five wins at the Majors, three have come Down Under, and he extended that record after he beat Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur 6-3 6-2 6-4 in an hour and 40 minutes.

He won a total of 96 points, almost 20 more than his Bosnian opponent and stayed solid behind the baseline to beat the diminutive Dzumhur. And his reward is a rare second round appearance in a Slam for the first time since the 2016 US Open.

Having been ranked as high as no.71, Duckworth is closing in on top 100 once again after returning to the winner’s circle at last year’s Bangalore Challenger.

Auger-Aliassime v Duckworth Prediction and Tip

Duckworth’s Grand Slam record is terrible. This is unchartered waters for him. Granted he has been unlucky with injuries in the past, he hasn’t looked remotely close to posing a challenge when getting entry into it. But he starts this match on the back of some excellent performances in the last fortnight. Auger-Aliassime should pull through, but not without a test.

Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/4 (bet365)
