Murray Warms up with Biella Challenger Run

It was a disappointing start to the season for Murray, who was to take the flight to Australia for the Australian Open but an 11th hour positive test for Covid-19 squashed those hopes. While he recovered quickly enough, there were no allowances provided by the Australian Open organisers for any last-minute entrances.

What that meant was Murray then opted to warm himself up for the rest of the season by participating in the Biella Challenger in Italy, and finished that indoor hard court tournament as a losing finalist. He had a good workout, winning three of the four matches in straight sets and finally falling to Illya Marchenko in the final.

Last year, Murray featured in just seven matches at the highest level, with his third round appearance at the Cincinnati Masters being his best showing. A couple of exhibition tournaments in Britain would have helped too but that untimely attack of the virus has meant the start to his season has been delayed to the last week of February.

Can he go really deep in this competition?

Gerasimov Makes Mixed Start after Decent 2020

28-year-old Gerasimov has been there or thereabouts around the 70th rank on the ATP charts and he comes into this tournament having made a mixed start to the season. A finalist at the 2020 Pune Open, Gerasimov had also gotten through to the quarterfinal stage of the Nur-Sultan Open late last season.

And he started off this year with a third round appearance at the Murray River Open in the lead-up to the Australian Open.

Unfortunately in the tournament before that, in Antalya, and at the Australian Open after that, Gerasimov failed to get going too well, losing in the first and second round respectively. At the Australian Open, incidentally, he lost to Aslan Karatsev, the surprise semifinalist, but what will worry him is the manner of the defeat in that encounter – he won just one game across the three sets.

Murray v Gerasimov Prediction and Tip

While Gerasimov will give himself a chance here, Murray starts a favourite at 1/2 to win this and should get through to a victory given he has shown there’s no real rustiness in his tennis.

Tip: Murray to win: 1/2 (bet365)
