Koepfer Looking to Return Back to Career-Best

Having gotten to a career-best ranking of 61st in the world, Koepfer will now hope to return back to that after having made a less than ideal start to the new season.

He featured in the Australian Open tuneup tournament, the Great Ocean Road Open in early February but was knocked out in the first round despite starting out as a favourite against Chris O’Connell.

A straight-set win at the year’s first Grand Slam would have warmed his hearts, also given it was his first ever match win in the Melbourne major, but then became a second round casualty to Dominic Thiem. While that loss was on expected lines, he would have hoped to do better than win a mere six games in that encounter

He now kick-starts his clay-court season in Cordoba, on a surface he made it as far as the quarterfinal at the Rome Masters last season, starting out in the qualifiers. He will feel slightly more confident about himself here.

Coria Also 1-2 This Year But Has Played a Challenger

Much like Koepfer, Coria’s returns this year have resulted in a win and two defeats on the ATP circuit. His sole win came at the Murray River Open where he overcame Radu Albot in the first round but then fell to Taylor Fritz in the second in straight sets.

At the Australian Open which followed, Coria was drawn to face Milos Raonic in the first round and he managed to eke out a mere eight games out of that encounter.

What could work in Coria’s favour is unlike his opponent, the Argentine has played an extra Challenger tournament – at Concepion, in which he reached the quarterfinal – and while he fell to Alejandro Tabilo despite going in as a favourite, he does have the advantage of having adjusted to the surface unlike his opponent here.

Koepfer v Coria Prediction and Tip

Coria holds the edge here, starting out at 4/6 to win this opener while Koepfer is 11/10 to clinch this. The feeling we get is Koepfer could edge this past the Argentine but more vitally we could be looking at a tough fight.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 11/8 (bet365)
