Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Sebastian Korda Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 35-year-old Tsonga and the 20-year-old Korda.

Tsonga Returns After a Long Break

Former World No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France will be back on court on Monday after more than a year’s absence due to a back injury. The World No. 62 has not played since retiring against Alexei Popyrin in the first round of the Australian Open last January.

The 2008 Australian Open finalist, who was hoping to play at his home slam last year, had to delay his return to competition due to a persistent lower back issue.

The big-serving right-hander, who has appeared in one final and five semifinals in the majors, will be hoping to shake off the rust quickly and regain his 2019 form, which saw him capture two titles and finish with a 33-19 record. One of those titles came in Montpellier where he beat compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert in a lopsided final.

If Tsonga can hit the ground running against Korda, he would be seen as a serious contender for the title, which would be his second in Montpellier.

The Frenchman has won 10 of his 18 titles at home, including the 2008 Paris Masters, one of his two Masters 1000 titles. The other one came in Toronto in 2014.

Korda Looking To Build on a Great Start

It’s been a good start to the season for 20-year-old Sebastian Korda, who comes into the ATP 250 event on the back of a title success at the ATP Challenger event in Quimper, France, which also helped him break into the top 100 for the first time in his career.

The World No. 88 kicked off the season with a run to a first ATP Tour final at Delray Beach. Starting with a first-round win over Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon, Korda defeated Tommy Paul in the next round before accounting for John Isner in the quarterfinal and Briton Cameron Norrie in the semifinal.

Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz dashed Korda’s hopes of winning a maiden Tour title as he defeated the American 6-3, 6-3 in the final.

The 2018 Australian Open boys’ champion made quite an impression at Roland Garros last year, reaching the fourth round on his main draw debut. Korda defeated Andreas Seppi, John Isner and Pedro Martinez in the first three rounds before falling to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

Son of former men’s No. 2 Petr Korda and former women’s No. 26 Regina Rajchrtova, Sebastian has a solid hard court record and is 9-1 in all matches on the surface this year. The right-hander, who gave the Australian Open qualifiers a miss, will be looking to carry his good form to Montpellier.

Tsonga v Korda Prediction and Tip

The sport is all about being in good rhythm and Tsonga may need a bit of court time to get in the groove. With form on Korda’s side, expect him to start with a win.

Tip: Korda to win: 4/6 (bet365)
