Petra Martic v Ludmilla Samsonova Head to Head

The only time before this they played each other was at the 2020 Palermo Open on clay and Martic had won that one in a tough three-setter.

Martic Hoping to Overcome Inconsistencies

It’s been a bit of this and bit of that from the racquet of Martic for a while. A semifinal at the WTA Dubai last year, for instance, was followed by a first round exit at Doha.

Post the pandemic resumption in August, she again made it as far as the semifinal in the first tournament Martic played, in Palermo, but followed it up with a second round in Prague. Fourth round at the US Open, an opening round defeat in Rome, a third round at the French Open and then another first round exit at the Ostrava Open – these are all instances of how Martic’s form has fluctuated

This year she is 3-3 on win-loss so far with an opening round defeat at the Australian Open which would rankle the world number 21. She managed to get to the quarterfinal in the tournament that followed in Melbourne but losing 6-0, 6-4 to Daria Kasatkina might not have helped her confidence.

She now starts off against a player ranked outside the top 100, hoping she can make it two tournaments in a row of solid showing for a change.

Samsonova Coming off Maiden Grand Slam Win

Before this year, Samsonova had never won a match in the main draw of Grand Slams, having made seven attempts. Her opening round win in Melbourne, coming off as a qualifier, against Paula Badosa was her first victory ever at a major.

And while she lost to Garbine Muguruza in the second round, that opening win for the 117th-ranked Russian would have been a source of some confidence.

Unfortunately for Ludmilla, that was followed by a narrow defeat at the hands of Sara Sorribes Tormo in the opening round the Phillip Island Open, having also lost her opener at the Yarra Valley Classic held in the same city before the year’s first major.

Samsonova will be up against it facing the world number 21 but will take hope from Martic’s inconsistencies in recent times.

Martic v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

Martic is a heavy favourite here given the gulf in their rankings but we think the Russian could trip her over for a while before Martic comes back to carve out a win.

Tip: Martic to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
