Lorenzo Sonego v Tommy Paul Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the final of a Challenger event in Lecco, Italy, in 2015. On that occasion, Paul won in straight sets.

Sonego, A Quarter-Finalist in Montpellier

Sonego may only have made the second round in Melbourne, but that still equalled his previous best performance at a Grand Slam. And he will have been kicking himself after missing the chance to go further, leading Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez by two sets before eventually missing.

Back in Europe, he was in action last week in Montpellier where he was the number seven seed.

He was made to battle in the first round by Hugo Gaston of France, the world 162, before eventually progressing in three sets.

Many expected him to struggle in his next match against the up and coming American Sebastian Korda, but the Italian raised his game, winning in straight sets with his serve barely threatened.

It was a different story though in his quarter-final with David Goffin of Belgium, the number two seed.

Sonego dropped his serve in the opening game of the match, and Goffin was able to serve out for the set from there.

When he broke the Goffin serve early in the second set, the Italian thought he had found a way back into the match. But the Belgian broke back immediately, and then broke once more.

Sonego saved two match points, but could not prevent Goffin converting the third.

Paul Struggling to Convert Junior Form to Senior Tour

The winner of the French Open, and runner-up in the US Open as a  junior, Paul is still searching  for success on the senior ATP tour, although he has won 10 tournaments on the junior circuits.

Post lockdown in 2020, he only ever got beyond the second round once in a tournament, reaching the quarter-final in Nur-Sultan before losing to the eventual winner, John Millman of Australia.

2021 has started in a similar vein.

The first event he entered was in Delray Beach, where he overcame the challenge of Cameron Norrie of Great Britain, before losing to Alexei Popyrin of Australia in the second round.

And, again at the Australian Open, although he began well enough, beating the experienced Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round, his run was ended by Casper Ruud of Norway.

Paul actually won the first set, but then Ruud took control of the match, as the American struggled on serve.

This will be his first match since that defeat.

Sonego v Paul Prediction and Tip

Sonego will be the favourite for this match, against an opponent who normally struggles to go deep into tournaments. Paul won their previous meeting, but that was nearly six years ago and is not a reliable guide to comparative form.

Tip: Sonego to win the match: 3/5 (bet365)
