Andrey Rublev v Andy Murray Head to Head

This will be the second match between the two players on the tour. Murray won the only encounter between them at the 2017 Australian Open, when he was ranked number one in the world, dropping only five games.

Rublev Hoping To Capitalize On Strong Start

Andrey Rublev has been in phenomenal form of late, winning five titles in 2020, making his first ever Tour Finals and breaking into the top eight of the ATP rankings.

He continued his strong run of form at the start of the season too, leading Russia to the finals of the ATP Cup, alongside Daniil Medvedev and winning all his matches. The Russian continued his run at the Australian Open, where he was in ominous form until the quarter-finals and ran into compatriot Daniil Medvedev and lost in straight sets.

Seeded fourth here this week at Rotterdam, another potential meeting with Medvedev in the finals looms, but prior to that Rublev has to make his way through a stacked half of the draw. In his opener against American qualifier Marcos Giron, Rublev probably had a sterner challenge than expected.

It was a close first set that went to a tiebreak where the Russian upped his level, and there was no looking back thereafter as he sailed through the second set 6-1, in turn wrapping up a 16 match winning streak at ATP 500 tournaments and setting himself up for a second round encounter against the veteran and former world number one Andy Murray.

Uphill Task For Murray

Former world number one and three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray continues his return to the tour and it does not seem to get any easier, as his mix of injuries, early losses and challenging wins continues.

After an opening round loss at Montpellier, the Briton was up against Dutch veteran Robin Haase who is ranked number 193 in the world, 70 spots below Murray.  Murray looked to struggle early on as the Dutch ran away with the opening set 6-2.

The two-time Wimbledon champion came back strong when he was two points away from losing the match in the second set to take it to a tiebreak and clinch it 7-2.  Murray continued his strong run in the final set, winning four games in a row and winning the decider 6-3.

Into the second round, while the former world number one has shown glimpses of his past, he continues to struggle physically and it remains to be seen how much of a challenge he can provide to the bigger names in the draw.

Rublev v Murray Prediction and Tip

While the match-up sounds exciting, it is more to do with the Murray’s stature than current form. Murray looked physically spent by the end of the last match against Haase and the task here is even more stringent. Expect the younger, fitter and in form Rublev to prevail in straight sets.

Tip: Rublev to win in straight sets: 8/11 (bet365)
