Leylah Fernandez v Anna Kalinskaya Head to Head

They have never faced off at the WTA level but had played each other in an exhibition match during the pandemic break in June 2020. Fernandez had overcome a one-set deficit to defeat Kalinskaya in three sets in that match.

Fernandez with a Slow Start

Teenager Fernandez had a decent enough previous season to help her break into the top 100 but hasn’t quite got her year going in 2021. The Canadian has played in three tournaments so far, winning just two matches and losing three.

She made it past Jasmine Paolini at the Abu Dhabi Open but fell to Tamara Zidansek in the second round there. This was followed by a second round exit in the Australian Open tune-up tournament before Elise Mertens sent her packing at the Australian Open opener. Fernandez lost 6-1, 6-3.

Fernandez shot to fame when the Canadian, as a qualifier, made it to the final of the Acapulco Open last season and then later in the season, broke into the third round of the French Open – her best Grand Slam showing ever.

With that kind of a season behind her back, Fernandez will hope to get going in this tournament, also played in the country where she had made her maiden – and so far, only – final at a WTA event.

Kalinskaya’s Struggles Since Pandemic Continue

It’s not been the greatest past 12 months for Kalinskaya whose struggles have seen her win just one main draw match in the period between tennis went on the pandemic break and now. That victory had come in the first round of the US Open but on both sides of that win, the Russian struggled to make it through to the main draw, let alone win a match there.

Ranked 121st in the world right now, having fallen from her career-best of 96th which she had achieved after a strong 2019 season, Kalinskaya’s start to this season hasn’t been the best either.

After a struggling first round win in the Australian Open qualifiers, she fell to a second round loss there. Then Kalinskaya travelled to Melbourne, Australia, for the Gippsland Trophy, lost in the first round to Katie Boulter and hasn’t played since.

And while she now plays an opponent who hasn’t had a top start to the season either, it would need Kalinskaya a major turnaround to get past the Canadian.

Fernandez v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip

This might be a match between two players ranked in the 80-120th bracket but Fernandez is a heavy favourite to win this and in straight sets.

Tip: Fernandez to win in straight sets: 10/11 (bet365)
