Tiafoe Survives Thriller with Jarry

Tiafoe had an almighty struggle to beat the Chilean wildcard, Nicholas Jarry, in a high class first round match. It was a match where serve dominated for the first two sets, with neither man able to take the other’s serve, and both went to tie-breaks.

In the first instance, Tiafoe led 6-4, but could not convert his first chances and it needed several more points before he could secure the set. In the second set he held three match points, but he wasted all of them and Jarry fought back to level.

Finally, in the third set, Jarry dropped his serve, but he bounced back straight awa to level the match, forcing yet another tie break.

Again Tiafoe held three match points, the difference being this time being that he was able to convert the third.

Bagnis Comes from Behind Against Italian

Like Tiafoe, it took Bagnis three sets to get past the Italian Marco Cecchinato, the world 89, in the first round. The first set went with serve and eventually ended in a tie-break which Cecchinato took to edge ahead.

The match, though, changed on its head in the second set, with Bagnis securing two service breaks at the start which he consolidated to level.

And, again, he broke early in the third set to take control of the match. He then broke the Italian once more and, although Cecchinato broke him straight back, he once more broke Cecchinato in the eighth game.

He served out for the win to set up a re-match with Tiafoe.
