Rublev On a Hot Streak

Andrey Rublev has continued his hot streak in 2021 and will begin his defense of the Qatar Open on Wednesday.

The World No. 8 picked up an eighth career title in Rotterdam on Sunday to improve to 13-1 this year. The 23-year-old, who won five tournaments last year, defeated Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the final to claim his fourth consecutive ATP 500 title.

Rublev, who won two ATP 250 events in Qatar and Adelaide before the lockdown last year, had won three ATP 500 events in Hamburg, St. Petersburg and Vienna in the later half of 2020.

Having ended the last season with a 41-10 record, the feisty Russian kicked off 2021 in style, winning all four of his singles matches at the ATP Cup and leading Russia to a maiden title. He followed that success with a run to his first Australian Open quarterfinal, where he was outclassed by compatriot and eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev.

That defeat remains the only blemish for him this year, as he stayed unbeaten in Rotterdam, dropping just one set en route to the title.

A four-time major quarterfinalist, Rublev, who won his first two titles in Umag in 2017 and Moscow in 2019, has lost just two finals in his career.

One of them was in Doha in 2018, where he lost to Gael Monfils in the final.

Last year, Rublev won the title without dropping a set in the tournament. Beginning with a win over Mikhail Kukushkin in the second round, the Russian defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the quarterfinal and Miomir Kecmanovic in the semifinal before easing past qualifier Corentin Moutet in the final.

Gasquet Rolls Past Rola

Rublev will begin his quest for a ninth career title on Wednesday against France’s Richard Gasquet, who eased into the second round after a straight sets win over Slovenia’s Blaz Rola.

A three-time Grand Slam semifinalist, Gasquet needed just an hour and 16 minutes to beat the qualifier 6-4, 6-4.

The Frenchman didn’t face a single break point in the match, while converting two of three to win his first match of the season. His only previous appearance this year ended in a straight sets defeat to American Mackenzie McDonald in the first round of the Murray River Open.

A 15-time champion on the tour, the 34-year-old won his last title in ‘S-Hertogenbosch in 2018. He reached the semifinals of the same tournament in 2019, and also reached the last four of the Cincinnati Masters, ending the 2019 season with a 17-17 record.

A semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2007 and 2015 and at the U.S. Open in 2013, Gasquet had a 10-10 record last year, reaching the semifinals in Sofia and quarterfinals at Montpellier and Dubai.

Rublev v Gasquet Prediction and Tip

The defending champion is on a hot streak and is expected to make a fast start against Gasquet on Wednesday.

Tip: Evans to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
