Sinner Survives Barrere Scare

2019 Next Gen ATP Finals champion Jannik Sinner found himself in real trouble in his first round contest against France’s Gregoire Barrere, but the 19-year-old held his nerves and found a way past the World No. 115 in a dramatic three-set contest.

Avoiding a third defeat on the trot, the Italian won the up-and-down contest 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 in two hours and 52 minutes.

Sinner, who began the season by winning the Adelaide International title, suffered back-to-back losses in the first round of the Australian Open and the first round in Montpellier.

He, however, came to Marseille with a winning 5-2 record this season, having won all five en-route to his second career title in Adelaide, where he beat compatriot Stefano Travaglia in the final.

The title in Adelaide was also Sinner’s second in a row after he closed out 2020 with his maiden ATP triumph in Sofia, where he beat Canada’s Vasek Popisil in the final.

He finished 2020 with a 19-11 record, which also included a run to the quarterfinal of the French Open and a semifinal in Cologne.

Against Barrere on Monday, Sinner threw away a 4-2 lead in the third set, allowing the Frenchman to break him twice in the next three games and serve for the match at 5-4. But Barrere failed to close out the contest and Sinner came roaring back to win his sixth match of the season.

Gaston Rallies To Oust Novak

Facing Sinner in the next round will be another next gen player Hugo Gaston, who rallied from a set down to beat Austria’s Dennis Novak in the first round on Monday.

Saving six of nine break points and converting five of 14, the 20-year-old won the two-hour contest 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

It was the left-hander’s first win since his surprise run to the fourth round of the French Open on his main draw debut last year.

Gaston accounted for fellow Frenchman Maxime Janvier in the first round, Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in the Round of 64 and Stan Wawrinka in the third round at Roland Garros before falling to Dominic Thiem in a dramatic five-setter in the Round of 16.

This year, he failed to qualify for the Australian Open, losing in the first round of qualification and lost to Lorenzo Sonego in the first round in Montpellier.

Sinner v Gaston Prediction and Tip

Sinner will be the favourite to win this contest. Gaston will take confidence from his first round win but he will find the going tough against the fifth seed. Expect the Italian to advance to the last eight.

Tip: Sinner to win in straight sets: 4/9 (bet365)
