Khachanov Looking For Another Good Start

2018 Marseille champion Karen Khachanov will begin his 2021 campaign in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, after the third seed received a first-round bye in the ATP 250 event.

The World No. 21 has been in decent form this season and comes into the tournament with a 7-3 record this year.

The 24-year-old aggressive baseliner began the season with wins over Australia’s Max Purcell, South Africa’s Kevin Anderson and the Netherlands’ Botic Van de Zandschulp on his way to the semifinal of the Great Ocean Road Open, before falling to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in a three-set contest.

At the Australian Open, Khachanov continued his good form, beating Aleksander Vukic and Richard Berankis in the first two rounds to enter the Round of 32 for the third consecutive year but was denied a spot in the Round of 16 yet again, this time by Matteo Berrettini, who came out on top despite playing through abdominal pain.

Last week, Khachanov featured at the Rotterdam Open and began well by knocking out the eighth seed Stan Wawrinka in the first round in straight sets. He followed that with another comfortable win in the Round of 16, dispatching Britain’s Cameron Norrie in straight sets.

In the quarterfinal, against No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, Khachanov drew first blood by taking the opening set, but failed to advance after the Greek came roaring back into the contest to win in three.

Yet to lose a final, Khachanov captured three of his four ATP titles in 2018, which included his maiden Masters 1000 success in Paris. He also won in Marseille that year, beating France’s Lucas Pouille in a thrilling three-set final.

The Russian, who won his first title in Chengdu in 2016, also won in Moscow in 2018.

He had finished the 2020 season with a 20-15 record.

McDonald Keeps Improving

Playing Khachanov in the next round will be American Mackenzie McDonald, who ousted Italy’s Stefano Travaglia in the first round on Tuesday.

The World No. 120, who converted just one of 14 break point opportunities in the match, won crucial moments to score a 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-1) win over the 65th ranked Travaglia.

The two-hour-and-12-minute contest saw McDonald win 108 of the 208 points played in the match.

The win improved the 25-year-old to 5-3 this year. He also featured in two Challenger events over the last couple of weeks in Nur Sultan, going all the way to winning the first one by beating Austria’s Jurij Rodionov in the final.

A former World No. 57, McDonald who is trying to break back into the top 100 after a recent surgery saw him slide down the rankings, reached the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career last month.

Having never gone past the second round in Melbourne, McDonald ousted Marco Cecchinato, 22nd seed Borna Coric and Lloyd Harris in the first three rounds to enter the Round of 16 before falling to fourth seed and eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

McDonald, whose season started with a first-round defeat at the Delray Beach Open, got his first win of 2021 against Richard Gasquet at the Murray River Open. He was knocked out by Alex Bolt in the next round of the Australian Open warm-up event.

Khachanov v McDonald Prediction and Tip

With McDonald fast improving, Khachanov won’t take his opponent lightly. But expect the Russian to have all the answers to what McDonald throws at him in the Round of 16.

Tip: Kachanov to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
