Vandeweghe Looking to Reinvent Herself

Coco Vandeweghe, once a top 10 player, is currently ranked in the early 200s on the account of her poor performance on the tour over the last couple of seasons.

Last season, she featured in only a few events at the start of the year before taking the rest of the year off. Her best run then was reaching the quarterfinal in the WTA 125K Series event in Newport.

As for her run in 2021, she started playing only last week, starting with the WTA Guadalajara where she lost her opening match to Mihaela Buzarnescu. Having missed out on the Australian Open Series and the Middle East Swing, the 29-year-old American will now look to find some momentum on the tour in Mexico.

In 2017, Vandeweghe was well on track to become a steady, top 10 player. Back then, she reached the semifinal in the Australian Open and US Open, and the final in the WTA Elite Trophy and Silicon Valley Classic. The following season, she fell out of the top 100 owing to injury and inconsistent results.

The American returned to the tour from rehab in August 2019 after months of no tennis action. Since then, she has spent her time in futile attempts to reclaim her former glory.

Fernandez in a Comparatively Better Run

Leylah Fernandez is currently World No. 87 which is definitely a remarkable accomplishment for the teenager. Having turned pro only a couple of years ago, the Canadian has already shown what she is capable of and has certainly got a bright future ahead of her.

So far this season, she has featured in the WTA Abu Dhabi and the Grampians Trophy, where she reached the second round. Fernandez also featured in the Australian Open where she fell in the opener to Elise Mertens.

Last season was a breakthrough one for Leylah who cracked the top 100 with some brilliant tennis. Her best run came in Mexico – the WTA Acapulco where she reached her maiden WTA singles final as a qualifier but lost to Heather Watson. The following week, she reached the quarterfinal – right here in Monterrey after beating Sloane Stephens.

Additionally, the 18-year-old also reached the second round in the US Open and the third round in the French Open.

Vandeweghe v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Vandeweghe may have the experience but she is highly rusty and is definitely out of sorts. By contrast. Fernandez has got some wins under her belt has a fair deal of momentum too.

Expect this to be an entertaining affair, one where the Canadian ought to come out on the top.

Tip: Fernandez to win in 2-1: 1/1 (bet365)
