Felix Auger Aliassime v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

Sandgren won their only matchup at the Cincinnati Masters in 2020, rallying to beat the Canadian 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Auger Aliassime Looking To Put Rotterdam Behind

World No. 19 Felix Auger Aliassime comes into the tournament with a 7-3 record this year.

The 20-year-old Canadian, who is seen as one of the brightest NextGen players on the Tour, is still searching for his first ATP title, despite having made seven finals, including one at the start of this year.

Beginning the season at the Murray River Open, Auger Aliassime defeated Yuichi Sugita, Egor Gerasimov, Jiri Vesely and Corentin Moutet en route to the final, but just like his previous six finals, he failed to win even a set before falling to Britain’s Dan Evans 2-6, 3-6.

Continuing his good form in Melbourne, the 6’4” right-hander ousted Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, James Duckworth and Denis Shapovalov in the first three rounds of the Australian Open to reach the fourth round of a major for the second time in his career, having reached that far at the U.S. Open last year.

However, Auger Aliassime was stopped from advancing further by the surprise package of the tournament Aslan Karatsev, who blew away a two-set-to-love lead before making a final set comeback to win in five.

The Canadian next featured at the Rotterdam Open, where he reached the final in 2020, but this time he was knocked out in the first round by Japan’s Kei Nishikori in straight sets. Auger Aliassime was 23-19 in 2020, reaching the finals in Rotterdam, Marseille and Cologne.

Sandgren Has Won Just Once in Last Eight Matches

Facing Auger Aliassime in the first round will be America’s Tennys Sandrgren, who comes into the tournament with a 1-2 record this year.

The World No. 58 began the year in Melbourne-1, and got off to a good start, defeating Australia’s John-Patrick Smith in the first round. The 29-year-old was, however, knocked out by Italy’s Salvatore Caruso in the next round. Both of his matches in the tournament needed a third set to decide the winner.

At the Australian Open, the 2020 quarterfinalist was blown away by Alex de Minaur in the first round.

The 29-year-old is a two-time finalist on the tour, finishing runner-up to Steve Johnson at the U.S. Clay Court Championships in 2018, and winning the Auckland Open title, by beating Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the final in 2019.

The American was 8-13 in 2020. He has won just once in his previous eight matches and will be looking to get some form going this week in Acapulco.

Auger-Aliassime v Sandgren Prediction and Tip

Sandgren won a very close contest between the two in Cincinnati last August, so expect this to be a close affair again. However, going by their forms, Auger Aliassime will hold the edge. Expect the Canadian to avenge his last year’s defeat on Monday.

Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
