Marin Cilic v Sebastian Korda Head to Head

Cilic and Korda have not met before this. It will be their first meeting in the series.

Cilic Picks Up Form

Rapidly declining Croatian Marin Cilic is running out of time to resurrect his career. But he should be in fine spirits as he is bound to make his third appearance in Mexican soil.

Cilic, whose big fall from grace in the past 18 months has been well documented, made his first semifinal since Moscow 2019 at the newly established Singapore Tennis Open at the end of February. After two first round defeats to start the season, Cilic is picking up form, which should in essence be a welcome boost in his quest to return to former glories.

Currently sitting at no.43 in the world rankings, this is the lowest spot that the 2014 US Open champion has occupied in the last eight years.

The 32-year-old who reached a Grand Slam final as recent as January 2018, is only two titles away from becoming only the sixth active player to lift 20 tour-level crowns. And the Croat can achieve that improbable feat in the next few weeks, he will join an exclusive club of elite players including the Big Three, Andy Murray and Juan Martin Del Potro.

But the worry for Cilic is that he lost his most recent match to an up-and-coming youngster in Alexei Popyrin. The Australian is the same mold as Korda in terms of height and raw power.

Korda’s Stock Rising Fast

Sebastian Korda is the most exciting prospect for US men’s tennis right now. Having vaulted himself from a mid-level Challenger player to inside the top 100 for the first time, things are looking rosy for the 20-year-old American.

Korda who is six and half feet tall, has the height and the arms to generate consistent power off the ground. But the most important question was whether he had the legs. Would he be able to defend as well as attack? We had seen few examples of how lanky tennis players can be one-trick ponies. But certainly not Sebastian Korda, who is surprisingly a well-rounded athlete.

The 20-year-old moves like someone who is five inches shorter. With his height, his serve remains his biggest asset chipping with free points. His forehand is also a major weapon which he utilizes to finish points at will. His two-hander is a work-in-progress, but if you watched for the first time you wouldn’t spot any glaring weaknesses.

Korda made his top 100 debut earlier this year after a fine run of form at both tour level and the Challenger. In Delray, he made quite a splash as he beat two seeded players en route to his first final. Unfortunately for Korda, an upper leg injury derailed his momentum and lost routinely to Hubert Hurkacz.

However, less than two weeks later, he picked up his second Challenger title in Quimper, France, to confirm his arrival as one of the fastest rising Next Gen players.

Cilic v Korda Prediction and Tip

Korda starts as a slight favorite against a former Grand Slam champion. This means the careers of these two players are taking contrasting routes. As Cilic’s falls steeply, Korda’s is rising quicker. The American should probably get the better of the Croat, but it will be a tussle.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
