Thiem Yet To Settle Into The ’21 Season

Dominic Thiem came into 2021 with the pressure of winning his first ever major finally off his back. However, there have been the expectations of being one who is going to add to his title count and an actual equal with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, alongside Daniil Medvedev.

It was a disappointing start for the Austrian who looked woefully out of touch in his ATP Cup opener against Matteo Berrettini and the rusty run seemed to continue into his opener against Mikhail Kukushkin in the first round of the Australian Open as well. However, he looked to be getting into himself with a convincing win against Dominik Koepfer and a good comeback win against Aussie home favorite Nick Kyrgios.

The combination of the quarantine, the expectations, and the Kyrgios match took its toll on the Austrian as he looked a shadow of himself in the fourth round encounter against Grigor Dimitrov and that was the end of his first major of the year.

Thiem was the top seed in Doha last week, but after a close opener against Aussie Open surprise package Aslan Karatsev, he was up against veteran Roberto Bautista Agut. Agut and Thiem played a brilliant three-setter which was a match of inches, but eventually the Spaniard prevailed.

The Austrian is the top seed in Dubai again this week, and he will really be looking at a deep run and possibly a title to add to his his tally, heading to the Miami Masters and the clay season thereafter.

Harris Looking For Another Big Win

24-year-old South African Lloyd Harris has been on the tour for only a couple years now, but done well to break into the top 100 of the ATP rankings and notch up some good wins from time to time with increasing frequency.

The winner of 13 ITF Futures titles, Harris made  the semi-finals of the Chengdu Open in 2019 and had a good start to 2020 before the pandemic hit. The South African made  the finals of the 2020 ATP 250 at Adelaide, where he lost in the finals to Andrey Rublev who went on a run last year.

2021 did not get off the best of starts for Harris, but the South African can take some heart from a third round loss at the Aussie Open and a strong win last week in Doha against Stan Wawrinka before a narrow loss to in-form Hungarian Marton Fucsovics.

Looking clinical in the qualifiers here in Dubai, Harris followed it with a good comeback win against Aussie Christopher O’ Connell in the first round and will be hoping to put up a good show against the top seed Thiem next.

Thiem v Harris Prediction and Tip

Thiem has not yet looked to hit the form he is know for, i.e what we saw in 2020. But, although Harris has looked in good touch, the difference in levels is still wide. The Austrian should sail through his opener with minimal trouble.

Tip: Thiem  to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
