Lorenzo Sonego v Bernabé Zapata Miralles Head to Head

The pair have met twice before on the junior circuits, and Sonego won on each occasion. Their first meeting was on hard courts in Germany in 2017, and their second on clay in France, two years later.

Sonego Hoping for Good Run in Dubai

Having been given a bye in the first round and now a draw against a qualifier, Sonego will be hoping for a decent run in Dubai.

Prior to this, he has had a mixed 2021 so far, beginning in Melbourne, where he got to the second round of the Australian Open only to throw away a winning position against another Spaniard, the veteran Feliciano Lopez. Sonego was leading by two sets and was within two games of victory, but still contrived to lose.

He then got to the third round in Montpellier before he was beaten in straight sets by David Goffin.

His last two tournaments did not go so well though, losing in the first round in both Rotterdam and Doha, both defeats coming at the hands of American players. Tommy Paul beat him on Dutch soil, whilst Taylor Fritz defeated him in Qatar.

Zapata Mirelles, A Spanish Qualifier

Zapata Mirelles spends the bulk of his time on the Challenger Tour, having failed to qualify for the Australian Open earlier this year.

However, he came through two rounds of qualifying in Dubai and was rewarded with a first round tie against the experienced and battle-hardened Australian John Millman, the world 46.

Despite that, he continually put pressure on the Millman serve in the first set, and got his reward with a break which he then consolidated.

In the second set It was the Spaniard who dropped his serve first but he did not panic, and, a few games later, broke back to level proceedings. Not content with that though, he then broke the Australian again at the next opportunity, and sealed the win with his second match point.

Sonego v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip

Although the Spanish qualifier had an impressive win over John Millman in the first round, Sonego is the higher ranked player for a reason, and he should have too much experience at this level for the qualifier, having beaten him on the two occasions they have played previously..

Tip: Sonego to win in straight sets: 11/8 (bet365)
