Sorribes Tormo Continues on from Guadalajara Win

Number seven seed Sorribes Tormo is arguably in the form of her life, having just won her maiden WTA event in Guadalajara last week, where she beat Eugenie Bouchard in the final, reaching her highest ever world ranking in the process.

Perhaps those exertions caught up with her on Tuesday, as she had a struggle to beat the Belarussian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko in their first round match on Tuesday.

The first set saw no less than seven games go against serve, but it was the qualifier who was the more consistent player, and she took the first set 7-5. The pair swapped breaks at the start of the second set, but the Spaniard gradually got control and she broke her opponent twice more to level the match.

And she thought she had got the upper hand when she broke early in the third set, only for the world 141 to fight back, and the scores were even once more at the start of the 10th game, with the woman from Belarus serving to stay in the match.

However, unfortunately for her, she faltered at the wrong moment, and gave Sorribes Tormo two break points, the second of which she converted to seal a hard-fought win.

Talented Qualifier Juvan Hoping for an Upset

Slovenian Juvan caused a surprise at this year’s Australian Open, where she knocked out Johanna Konta in the first round and went on to reach the third round before losing to Jennifer Brady, her best ever showing at a Grand Slam event.

Despite that. she was still made to qualify here, and had to overcome first Olga Govortsova of Belarus and then Kurumi Nara of Japan to make it through to the main draw.

There she met another qualifier in the shape of the Colombian Maria Camila Osorio Serrano, and she began badly the match by dropping her opening service game. However, she rallied by breaking back, and then broke the world 187 for a second time to take the first set.

The first five games of the set went with serve, but neither woman could hold after that. In the end though, Osorio Serrano, serving to stay in the match, could not handle the pressure and Juvan clinched the win with her second match point.

Tormo v Juvan Prediction and Tip

Sorribes Tormo will begin as the favourite to continue her winning run, but Juvan will try to make it tough for her, and this match could well go to straight sets.

Tip: Sorribes Tormo to win in three sets: 7/2 (bet365)
