Fernandez v Kristina Kucova Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 18-year old teenager from Canada, and the Slovakian, who is 12 years her senior.

Fernandez, who is still only 18, reached her first final on Mexican soil in Acapulco last year, before losing to Heather Watson in three sets, and a week after that, she reached the quarter finals here, beating Sloane Stephens on the way. She is now close to her highest world ranking ever, and has set her sights on the very top.
As yet, her results in 2021 have yet to match her performances from this time last year.
She was knocked out in the first round of the Australian Open by Elise Mertens and did not get beyond the second round in Guadalajara last week.
However, she began her campaign here with a comfortable win over the American wildcard, Coco Vandeweghe, now ranked 230 in the world, winning in straight sets, and never once cropping her serve.
Indeed, in the course of the match the American only forced one break point against her, and the Canadian saved that easily.

Kucova, Lucky Loser Knocks Out Top Seed
Kucova had little form coming in this event and was knocked out in the second round of qualifying by Lesia Tsurenko of Belarus.
However, she was given a reprieve, and earned a place as a lucky loser in the main draw against the top seed, Sloane Stephens. Fortunately for her, Stephens was in even more wretched form.
The die was cast right from the start as the first three games of the match went against serve, with Kucova leading after that run. Then another sequence of three dropped service games enabled her to stretch her lead, and she took the first set for the loss of just two games.
It was Kucova who dropped her serve first in the second set, but then the American’s game crumbled. She did not win another game after that and went out of the event with barely a whimper.
Fernandez v Kucova Prediction and Tip
Fernandez is the heavy favourite to advance against Kucova, who produced a major surprise to beat Stephens, but had shown very little form in 2021 prior to that. Lightening does not strike twice.
