Li, American Continues Her 2021 Progress

Li won the Tyler Pro Classic on the ITF tour last October, helping her break into the world’s top 100 for the first time.

And he has continued her rise up the rankings in 2021, helped by a successful Australian campaign.

She reached the final of the Grampians Trophy warm-up tournament in Melbourne, and, at the Australian Open itself, reached the third round before losing to Aryna Sabalenka. That matched her best ever result in a Grand Slam.

She had a month off before coming here, and then beat Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands in the first round, courtesy of a single service break in the first set and the odd one from three in the second.

On Thursday, she met Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia, dropping her opening service game but then bouncing back with two breaks of her own. Zidansek broke back to get the match back on serve, but, once more, she could not hold, and Li took the first set,

Li dropped her opening service game of the second set, but she did not have to wait long before she was level again, and then she broke the Slovenian again. There were no further alarms for the American who served out to love.

Zheng, Back to Winning Ways

Zheng is now the highest ranked player left in the tournament, but she came into the event with no recent form to her name at all.

Not featuring at all in 2020 on the Tour after lockdown, she had lost all six of her previous matches this year before arriving in Monterrey.

However, she was able to buck that trend by beating Varvara Grachova of Russia in the first round, the world 94, although it was a scrappy match, full of unforced errors and dropped serves.

That win though gave her confidence going into Thursday’s all-Chinese clash with compatriot Lin Zhu, and Zheng produced a much more assured performance against the world 101.

She broke Zhu in her first service game, broke her again, and then served out for the rest of the set from there.

Zhu survived break points against her at the start of the second set, but was not so fortunate in her next service game, and then was broken again as Zheng took complete control. She had a brief wobble when she had to save five break points on her own serve, but normal service was soon restored and she closed out the match.

Li v Zheng Prediction and Tip

Despite the fact that Zheng is the seed and the higher ranked player, Li is definitely in the better form of the two, having enjoyed a successful start to 2021, and she will begin as the favourite.

Tip: Li to win in straight sets: 11/1o (bet365)
