Viktoria Kuzmova v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

Fernandez, with a proven track record in Mexico

The 18-year-old Canadian was ranked in the early 200s at the start of 2020. However, on the back of a brilliant run in the Mexican Open and Monterrey Open, she stormed her way into the early 100s.

Fernandez rose to prominence when she reached the final in the WTA Acapulco as a qualifier, without dropping a set. She ultimately fell to Heather Watson in the final. A week later, she was a quarterfinalist in Monterrey where she lost to Elina Svitolina. The Canadian ended the season with the French Open where she reached the third round.

This season continues to be a positive one for Fernandez as she cracked the top 100 to reach her career-best singles ranking as World No. 86. While she has been working hard, her performance has been rather mediocre with early-round exits in all the competitions.

In the Australian Open Series, she never made it past the second round. It was a similar story in Guadalajara too where she lost in round two to Astra Sharma.

In Monterrey, however, Fernandez is turning the tide. Yet to lose a set, she has so far dispatched Coco Vandeweghe in the opener and followed it with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kristina Kucova.

Kuzmova, snapping her losing streak

The 22-year-old Kuzmova has lost her opening round matches in all the three WTA events she has featured in so far (except for Monterrey) in 2021. In the Yarra Valley Classic and Australian Open, she was beaten by Daria Gavrilova and Aryna Sabalenka respectively.

In Lyon, it was Camila Giorgi who beat her in the opener.

In Monterrey, Kuzmova finally snapped out of her funk, beating the likes of Caroline Dolehide and Harriet Dart in straight sets to reach the quarterfinal.

As a doubles player, however, the Slovak has had a much better time. With Anna Kalinskaya, she was the runner-up in the women’s doubles in the Yarra Valley Classic. In the Lyon Open, she went the distance but this time, she was paired with Arantxa Rus.

This also explains why Kuzmova’s singles ranking is #104 right now while in the doubles, she is #28.

Kuzmova v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Fernandez has had a better run than Kuzmova in the past few weeks (and last season for that matter). She may lack the experience but her opponent is having form issues of her own, something that should give the Canadian a good edge. Plus, the fact that she is ranked above Kuzmova should also give her a psychological advantage.

Expect this to be an intriguing affair, one that may see three sets in the match.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 1.80 (bet365)
