Jelena Ostapenko v Xiyu Wang Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 23-year-old Latvian and the 19-year-old Wang.

Ostapenko Searching For Consistency

2018 Miami Open finalist Jelena Ostapenko comes into the tournament with a 5-5 record this year.

Ranked 54th in the world, the Latvian, who was 9-8 in 2020, reaching just one quarterfinal, has been inconsistent in 2021 as well.

The 23-year-old began the year by winning the first two rounds of the Gippsland Trophy before going down to Elina Svitolina in the Round of 16.

The former World No. 5 was then knocked out of the first round of the Australian Open by Karolina Muchova.

In her next three tournaments in Doha, Dubai and St. Petersburg, Ostapenko won her first round matches but failed to go past the second rounds.

A seven-time WTA finalist, Ostapenko, who in 2017 became the first unseeded player since 1933 to win at Roland Garros, has won two more career titles, winning in Seoul in 2017 and in Luxembourg in 2019.

At the Miami Open in 2018, she reached the final by beating Petra Kvitova in the fourth round, Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinal and Danielle Collins in the semifinal before going down to Sloane Stephens in the title clash.

Xiyu Wang Looking To End Losing Streak

Facing Ostapenko in the first round will be 19-year-old Chinese left-hander Xiyu Wang, who is 1-5 from her six matches at all levels this year.

The 135th-ranked Wang had a decent 2020, reaching her first WTA semifinal in Acapulco, two weeks after playing in the quarterfinals in Hua Hin.

The Chinese, who has a career-high ranking of 106, began the 2021 season in Abu Dhabi, beating the Netherland’ Arantxa Rus in a tough three-setter in the first round.

Since that win in the season-opener in January, Wang has failed to win a match. She lost in the second round in Abu Dhabi to Elena Rybakina; exited the first round of an ITF event in Altenkirchen, Germany, falling to Poland’s Magdalena Frech; lost to Rus in the first round in Lyon and to Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the Round of 32 in Guadalajara before falling to Colombia’s Maria Camila Osorio Serrano in the first qualifying round in Monterrey.

Wang has featured in five ITF finals, winning three of them. Two of those titles were on clay, while one was on hard court.

Ostapenko v Wang Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko is the more accomplished player, higher ranked, vastly experienced and a Grand Slam champion. Expect her to advance with ease.

Tip: Ostapenko to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
