Alexei Popyrin v Feliciano Lopez Head to Head

These two players have not played at tour level before this, but they met twice at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown during the hiatus last year, splitting wins.

Popyrin Set for Miami Main Draw Debut

It seems Alexei Popyrin has reached his highest ceiling as a tennis player right now, and two weeks of intense competition in Miami will go a long way to push him towards a top 70 ranking. The potential is immense and their is no doubt the 22-year-old can surpass his current form.

Popyrin is rapidly ascending the global tennis ranks, and his stock is perhaps overshadowed only by the meteoric rise of Aslan Karatsev. The Aussie in his case, has made one of the biggest jumps in the rankings in the past month after winning his maiden ATP tour title in Singapore.

With a world ranking of no.86 on the eve of the Miami Masters where he is set for his tournament debut, Popyrin will attempt to record double digit match wins for the first quarter of the year when he plays 39-year-old Feliciano Lopez.

The general consensus is that Popyrin is playing better tennis than what his current ranking suggests, and this view is echoed by former Australian tennis player Todd Woodbridge who feels his countryman could crack the top 50 by the end of 2021.

Lopez On A Three-match Losing Streak

As Alexei Popyrin prepares for his Miami Open main draw debut, Feliciano Lopez has been a regular at this event and probably knows the city like the back of his hand.

Lopez will make his 18th appearance in southeastern Florida, but his record down the years has been dismal. His best appearance came in 2007 when he made the fourth round, and there has been a string of early exits in between.

At 39, Lopez is in a race to turn back time, but he still remains an awkward proposition to play against in the opening rounds of tournaments. So far in 2021, he has only won two matches, both at the Australian Open when he made the third round.

The Spanish left hander is on a three-match losing streak, after falling to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Miomir Kecmanovic in his last two tournament participations.

Popyrin v Lopez Prediction and Tip

Popyrin and Lopez are two great servers. The Spaniard’s side spin and dexterous slice can be a tough shot to handle even without generating pace. But the Aussie has a wide repertoire of shots in his arsenal and is the form player.

Tip: Popyrin to win: (bet365)
