Sloane Stephens v Oceane Dodin Head to Head

Stephens has never faced the 120th-ranked Dodin before this in a competitive encounter.

Stephens Has Won One Set All Season

It’s been that kind of a start to the season for Stephens. Four matches played, one set and zero matches won.

What makes it worse for Stephens is these defeats haven’t quite come against some of the more pedigreed players in the world, but those ranked around or lower than her on the WTA charts.

Unfortunately though, Stephens’ form over the last 15 months or so hasn’t been close to how a 49th-ranked player should have been playing. And had it not been for the tweaked rankings, Stephens might have even lost her spot in the top 100.

In 2020, for instance, Stephens won a mere four matches all year. Two of them came at the US Open where she made the third round and one at the French Open, which was the last time she won an encounter.

This year, her defeats have come at the hands of Leylah Fernandez, Yulia Putintseva, Varvara Gracheva and more recently to the 149th-ranked Kristina Kucova, when she lost 6-2, 6-2 at the Monterrey Open.

Dodin Hoping for First Main Draw Win

The former top-50 player Dodin has fallen a few places, making it difficult for her to feature in WTA tournaments. As a result of that, Dodin has played at only one of the WTA competitions before this, losing in the first round of the Lyon Open.

Dodin also tried the qualifying route at the Australian Open where she fell in the very first qualifier, and then has won just two rounds spread across three ITF competitions.

Her two qualifying victories at the Miami Open should help bolster her confidence, given she is yet to drop a set. As should the fact Dodin will be up against a player who is struggling for her own form.

Stephens v Dodin Prediction and Tip

Dodin will start off as a favourite with Stephens an outsider at 13/10. At some point we think Stephens will turn things around, and this could be a good chance to get going.

Tip: Stephens to win: 13/10 (bet365)
