Johanna Konta v Magda Linette Head to Head

Konta Hoping to Overcome Season Struggles

The pandemic hasn’t been kind to most but Konta is among those whose game has been affected a lot more than one would have imagined. After the kind of season the Brit number one had in 2019, she would have expected a lot more out of the time to follow.

Instead, Konta has won a sum total of 10 matches in the 15 months since the start of the 2020 season, including just one this year.

That victory came at the start of the 2021 season, when Konta defeated Bernarda Pera in straight sets to move into the third round of the competition. Since then, however, Konta went down to Irina Begu, got injured in her match against Kaja Juvan and then crashed out of her opener in Adelaide 6-2, 6-2 to Shelby Rogers.

One month on, what Konta would now hope for is a fresh beginning and a turnaround of fortunes as she looks to get re-settled on court. A few wins, and deep runs would be an added bonus for starters but for now, Konta would be desperate for some game time and she will get her first one against the world number 50.

Linette Returns Well after Knee Issues

Having missed the entire first quarter of the season including the Australian swing because of her knee-related issues, Linette finally made a comeback to tennis with an opening round encounter against Robin Montgomery. And while she was stretched to three sets, the Polish, 50th-ranked player looked comfortable in the final set to carve out a relatively easy win.

Linette, in his first match of the season, won 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, in a match which lasted an hour and 40 minutes, with Linette losing her serve just twice as opposed to breaking Montgomery a whopping six times in the match.

And while Linette got just 53% of her first serves in, she won three-fourths of those points to give herself an edge. It was only when that percentage went down to 50% points won in the second set that her American opponent was able to take any advantage.

It would be interesting to see whether Linette can find herself a way to run her opponent ragged, one who is herself on bit of a comeback trail.

Konta v Linette Prediction and Tip

Konta is 4/9 to win this while Linette starts off a rank outsider at 7/4 but the match could get a lot closer than this given both players have been out of the game for a bit. A fighting battle could be in the offing.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
