Daniel Evans v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

Their first ever meeting came on the Challenger circuit in which Evans defeated Tiafoe in the final at Knoxville to win the title. This was followed by three matches at the highest level, with Evans winning two of them and Tiafoe carving out one victory. All of these matches came on hard court surfaces.

Evans Still Basking in Maiden ATP Success Glory

His more recent results haven’t been the best but it wasn’t too long ago when Evans won his maiden ATP title and that confidence should keep him in a good stead. Playing his first tournament of the season at the Murray River Open, Evans had gone on to win all his five matches in straight sets including one in the final against Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime to lift the trophy.

Since then, however, it’s been bit of a slippery slope for Evans.

It started with the Australian Open where he would have backed him to get past fellow Brit Cameron Norrie but fell in a four-setter to him.

At the ATP Doha, he got past Jeremy Chardy in three sets and then had his chances against the returning Roger Federer in the second round only to give it away in a tough three-setter.

And when at the ATP Dubai the following week, Evans fell to a three-set loss at the hands of Aslan Karatsev.

What Evans needs here is bit of a decent run of form where he can win a few matches on the bounce but coming up against Tiafoe in his second round here following a first round bye won’t be an easy proposition.

Tiafoe Makes A Stirring Comeback

Down a set and 2-0 in the second set against the world number 70, Stefano Travaglia, it looked like curtains for the American Tiafoe in their second round match.

However, Tiafoe’s never-say-die attitude shone through as he first broke back to level the proceedings 2-2 in the second set. He followed it up by first holding serve despite being down three break-points in the eighth game of the set and then breaking his opponent in the ninth before serving out the set.

With the momentum having shifted, Tiafoe then broke his Italian opponent twice in the final set before wrapping it up on his serve off his second match-point.

Tiafoe has played six tournaments this season before this one in Miami and in all but one of them, he has failed to win two matches in a row? Can he turn things around in this one by overcoming his higher-ranked opponent?

Evans v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

Tiafoe, who is 29 places behind Evans on the ATP rankings, will start off as a favourite at 4/5 to win this one while the Briton is 1/1 because of his lack of recent form. We think Evans still has the wherewithal to see this through and will be our pick for this one.

Tip: Evans to win: 1/1 (bet365)
