John Isner v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

Isner and McDonald have never faced off against each other in any form of competitive tennis before this.

Isner’s Appearances, Few & Far Between

Since the pandemic break, one has rarely seen Isner take to court in any of the ATP competitions, featuring in three tournaments last season and just two this year.

And it’s not as if Isner has performed anywhere close to what one is used to seeing from his typically consistent self, with the American having plumetted from his 2019 season high ranking of ninth in the world to his current 28th.

Isner’s two tournament appearances, spread across two months have yielded in two wins. In the first at Delray Beach, Isner defeated Thiago Monteiro before losing to Sebastian Korda. And then in the latest showing at the Acapulco Open, he won his opener only to fall to Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in the second.

The good news for Isner he now enters a tournament where his record has been second to none. The American’s only Masters victory came at the Miami Masters in 2018 while he followed it up with another finals appearance the following season. Other than this, he has made the title-decider of a tournament on the Masters circuit only thrice.

Can he use that feel-good factor to push deeper into this tournament?

McDonald Benefits from Pospisil Meltdown

Bookmakers had pegged McDonald as a very slight favourite going into his first round match against Vasek Pospisil and in the end came away with a three-set victory. Not too many would argue, however, it was Pospisil’s stunning meltdown that helped McDonald immensely in that opening encounter, with the American even winning the first set off a point penalty that was incurred by the Canadian.

A swatted ball out of the park and a smashed racquet didn’t help Posipsil who looked to have been affected by ATP Tour chairman Andrea Gaudenzi’s alleged tirade against him for what he claimed was because he was uniting players against the ATP.

McDonald took advantage by breaking Pospisil twice, and while he lost the second set to a much calmer opponent, he came back in the third set to break his opponent in the sixth game and pocked the match off his first match-point.

The question is whether he can take the same form into his second round match against a player who himself was a part of the ATP Player Council but stepped down because of his own issues.

Isner v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Such has been the erratic nature of Isner’s form, he starts off a whopping 11/10 to win this, which are tempting odds to be honest because he is facing an opponent who is ranked a few slots behind him. Going with an Isner victory at a venue which is a fair favourite of his.

Tip: Isner to win: 11/10 (bet365)
